New 'Matrix' Movie in Works (deadline.com) 215

Deadline: Drew Goddard, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of The Martian who also directed The Cabin in the Woods, has been set to write and direct a new Matrix movie at Warner Bros. The franchise's original co-scribe and co-director Lana Wachowski is executive producing. It's still early days in regards to whether core cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith are coming back.

Goddard will produce with partner Sarah Esberg (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) via their Goddard Textiles banner. "Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters," said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production. "The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio."

Probably just another tax scam for the studio like Coyote vs. Acme. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... [wikipedia.org]

    • The worst part about that movie is the buzz in the furry community for it was enough to possibly carry it to sleeper hit status, as happened to Zootopia. Zootopia got caught in development hell with two rewrites after principal animation started and went on to be the highest grossing animated movie of all time (until Finding Dory topped it later the same year) thanks to a huge opening day with local furry communities buying out entire opening day auditoriums unleashing a hype train. Not bad for a dump mon
      • Zootopia was re-written to deal with the apparently inconceivable notion that Trump would be elected.

The directors changed the story to include the authoritative sheep in bitch's clothing and her "fascist" hold on the corrupt cops. It was re-written to show cops as racist. It was re-written to make the girl cop the hero, and the girl politician the villain.

It would be the next-to-last decent film Disney made. I truly enjoyed it, watched it 6x in theater and bought the bluray the day it came out, but it

        • I kind of agree.. If it's good, I can overlook the minor flaws and not get all upset to the point of ruining it.

I don't care about their agenda items that are to me is just another kind of fan service to substitute for quality. So they virtual signal, throwback reference, cameo, or simply theme (star wars whatever) the story.

The REAL problem is everything sucks and yes throwing out masters like Lassater who make all the hacks look bad is the problem. What they want is for people to have no taste or depth a

        • What? Lol, no, it was rewritten because it kept testing badly with audiences until the third script was just 24 Hrs. For Furries.
  • Start with the ending of the first and Neo going to bed, then fast-forward the following movies, and have Neo wake up saying "What a nightmare I've just had".

    • That's a good start, but they still have to find someone who hasn't lost the plot entirely to write the rest of the movie.

      • No, that's the whole movie. Three minute tops. Charge full price for tickets. Rake in billions.

They could do the same thing with Indiana Jones. Have him wake up at 90, on his deathbed, with Marion at his side and let him spend a few minutes telling her about his silly nightmare with aliens and ballistas before he dies.

I'm telling you, people would line up around the block to see their beloved characters and stories restored after decades of abuse. They don't want a new story, that don't need a new stor

I mean, seriously, where the hell do they want to go with the story from here? Hard reset and everyone back to the start?

Well... wouldn't be the worst idea, to be honest...

    • Prequel!!!!

    • Hard reset and start again, err , isnt that the main story arc anyway?

Matrix Rebooted Bob and Dot Matrix to the rescue.
    • "The Matrix" came out a long time ago. I would say a sequel is long overdue.

    • “Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made. Spaceballs the T-shirt, Spaceballs the Coloring Book, Spaceballs the Lunch box, Spaceballs the Breakfast Cereal, Spaceballs the Flame Thrower. The kids love this one. And last but not least, Spaceballs the Doll—me.” — Yogurt

A little green doll is a bit on-the-nose for Star Wars, but the point is that franchise films are a business. Cranking out several films (5-6 for the Matrix, if we count The Animatrix) and

    • 25 years on, The Matrix, with walkers. And those tennis ball things so they don't school up the floor.

The blonde in red is back, but none of the guys has the interest or capability to do anything about her.

Well... wouldn't be the worst idea, to be honest...

Well they haven't done a horrible ripoff of 2 and 3 yet.

      • There isn't much to rip off, though. These movies already sucked.

That fourth one was for 2 and 3 a bit like what the new Star Wars movies were for the Prequels: Some way to make the fanbase go "well, they weren't that bad when you think about..."

        • Of course it wasn't. The 4th one was like Starwars The Force Awakens. A poorly written fanservice movie that no one wanted which not only copied the original almost scene for scene, they actively broke the 4th wall in the movie and acknowledged that they'd seen this all before.

It couldn't have been worse than 2 or 3, they literally copied the homework of someone who did it right and changed a few things in the hope no one would notice.

          • It's not even a fanservice movie. Yes, it was full of "look, look, remember, nudge, nudge, wink, wink" moments, but at the same time it mocked the whole fanbase with its "yeah, it's just a fucking movie and we basically milk the dupes dry that buy our crap" spiel.

where the hell do they want to go with the story from here?

Well, there's resolving the whole humanity vs. machines conflict with more than a fragile ceasefile, for starters. (We want resolution/absolution in our stories.)

Or how about one side undoing Operation Dark Storm (the human-made blotting out of the sun) somehow, and seeing the consequences of it for both sides?

There's a lot more to do than just watching mind-numbing action sequences over and over again...

  • I get it now, Dad. It's funny when they do it to something that a lot of people care a lot about but I don't care about at all.
  • The last movie was boring and a thinly-veiled complaint from the creators that they didn't want to make the movie.

But I guess a payday is worth more than integrity or self-respect regardless of how much you've already made.

    • The studios can't let themselves be made fools of by creators purposely trying to kill exploitation of their work--- they have to make a reboot ASAP to show you can't ever stop them from raping the memories of good art.

    • I think Wachowski is involved to make sure it sucks or fails to be made; like the last time. Or... blackmail is involved?

    • Huh? Which creators didn't want to make that last movie? The one that didn't want to make it didn't make it and so wasn't a creator on it. The one that did want to make it wanted to do so as part of their grieving process which is not a great reason to make a movie but whatever. Warner Bros of course was all about the money and has always wanted to make more so no complaints from them.

    Why make a sequel now?

    • There was a sequel a few years ago and it stunk.... you not knowing just underscores the point.
    • by zlives ( 2009072 )

clearly they have lost good sense like the makers of The Highlander had to never make a sequel.

  • When the matrix first came out, I only went to see it thinking it was a show about linear algebra. The least they could have done is call the universe vector space.

    • Well, in the end, it turned out that yes, it was about a transformation. Sadly not that of a polar bear to a cartesian bear.

  • Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world

Good for you. This is what fan fiction archives are for. You wanna continue the world, do it there. Leave the rest of us out of it.

  • Three Matrix movies

(and even that count is off by two according to some views)

  • ... they never made any sequels to the Matrix. (though frankly the Judeo-Christian philosophy was pretty poorly done in the first one)

That home wasn't funny even the first time somebody made it in this thread. It's amazingly stale now. I hope you're proud of repeating a worn out, busted, lame thing even more times than they're talking about doing with The Matrix V: Matrix Retreaded.

I loved the first movie. Watching it in the theater was a genuine experience. The second movie (Reloaded) was a little goofy due to the over-reliance on certain nascent technologies, but I could appreciate the story. I was pumped for the third movie (Revolutions) because I thought they would course-correct a bit and present a solid movie. My expectations were not met.

As a fan of the Matrix movies (and even video games!), I wanted some type of continuation of the mythos, but that fourth movie was such a boring, self-indulgent, and performative stinker that I don't want to even consider further expansion of the mythos unless the Wachowskis don't have an influence. Much like modern Start Wars stories, it's better off without George Lucas having creative influence and better with Dave Filoni being on point.

Because I'm such a fan of the mythos, I will probably watch whatever gets produced and I'll need to make my own judgement on the final product, but I'm probably not going to look forward to it. My expectations are very low.

  • You had "Highlander" which was a great film... then "Highlander 2" which flopped onto its posterior, slightly below the coccyx... then "Highlander 3" (the apology for "Highlander 2")... then "Highlander 4" (the apology for the apology)... and then they finally realized they should quit while they're behind. The TV series was decent.

Oh wait... we're talking about "The Matrix"... a really good film... followed by its sequel that had my friend and me walking out, looking at each other and going, "Huh? We cou

  • ... for anyone looking forward to a series that died on its ass with the first sequel and got progressively worse and more pretentious.

  • Please get Lana away from this. Matrix 4 was an atrocity and an insult to everyone's childhood memories. There's something wrong with him/her. Some sort of mental instability and general incompetence when it comes to making movies.

Also Keanu needs to get rid of the beard. I know he doesn't want to show off his wrinkles but they can adjust that in post-production. It doesn't work with the clean machine-world of the Matrix.

Why do these people have to keep re-hashing, re-imagining existing stories and ideas ?

Did all the creative people die off or something ?

Things I don't want to see more of include:

    Star Wars
    Super Heros
    Zombies
    Terminators
    Matrix / Simulation Theory ( we won't talk about the last installment . . . . . ugh )
The " One " or the " Chosen One "
    John Wick
    Children saving the World
Anything that has 3+ sequels to it

FFS come up with NEW stories and quit re-hashing the old ones.

"Did all the creative people die off or something ?"

It cost far more money to:
      * setup a new universe rather than reuse existing stories
      * make up new film scenario rather than touch up/change existing one
      * market new film rather than ride pre-existing marketing film
      * trying to make new trend on film subject is more expansive than just follow existing trend
      * etc....

Basically for a long time Hollywood flirted both being a "art" (filming) and an industry (need profit). But IMO since the 70ies roughly, onward to today, the industry part (make a profit) overtook the art part , decades by decades. Don't get me wrong, there is still film done for the sake of the art, and even in pure commercial one the directors try to put their touch, and even in decades pre-70ies commercial profit was important, but my feeling is that nowadays it took ver so much that the art is secondary.
