An anonymous reader shares a report: Scams are all over the internet, and AI is making matters worse (no, Taylor Swift didn't giveaway Le Creuset pans, and Tom Hanks didn't promote a dental plan). Now, companies such as Match Group, Meta and Coinbase are launching Tech Against Scams, a new coalition focused on collaboration to prevent online fraud and financial schemes. They will "collaborate on ways to take action against the tools used by scammers, educate and protect consumers and disrupt rapidly evolving financial scams."
Meta, Coinbase and Match Group -- which owns Hinge and Tinder -- first joined forces on this issue last summer but are now teaming up with additional digital, social media and crypto companies, along with the Global Anti-Scam Organization. A major focus of this coalition is pig butchering scams, a type of fraud in which a scammer tricks someone into giving them more and more money through trusting digital relationships, both romantic and platonic in nature.

Reported the "Coldplay tickets" scam and the fake accounts peddling the fake tickets. Nothing. Scamming people does not violate their community standards.

that was the case when I used the free version as well so I can only assume someone curates the ads, which used to be the case for TV and radio. (there is a job which actually checks ads for validity in TV and Radio)
This makes the ads more valuable and doesn't ruin the reputation of the platform. It would be far simpler to block the ads at the source than wait for people to report them

They've been monetizing bot swarms on their platforms for decades and they're the same companies creating the AI tools these scammers use to run their accounts.
These companies represent the greatest financial beneficiaries of the fraud that they're claiming to want to curtail.
Decades from now this is gonna look like Joe Colombo starting the Italian-American Civil Rights League. Implausible deniability.

I still see people on FB posting those damn "If you say this they can't claim your photos!" or "Repost this and it is a legal declaration...", etc type crap. Some people won't make the slightest effort to check things and blindly believe anything.

And are usually the first ones to cry "I just shared this meme and Facebook already have it marked as false information. There's no way they could have fact checked it already! They are violating my 1st amendment rights." Not even commenting on the type of meme/content that is generally being flagged, just the absolute obliviousness on the part of the re-sharer as to how those types of sites work.

If Meta (or YouTube or any other media site) wanted to stop scams it is very simple - make it easy to report scams, and then have human beings for every major language who review the ads and take them down. There, that's it.
And if they want to get extra fancy, start putting in some red flag detectors - use of burner accounts, scammy phrases in the transcription, logo/facial recognition, links to questionable domains, targeting of certain vulnerable demographics and so on. So if Elon Musk is talking about Quantum AI, it should be simple to flag and kill that shit before anyone sees it.
But no, that's too difficult. Instead they'll form a coalition and blow a lot of hot air while doing very little about the issue.
