Zuckerberg Disses Closed-Source AI Competitors as Trying To 'Create God' (techcrunch.com) 29

Mark Zuckerberg has criticized the notion of a singular, dominant AI in a new interview. He argued against the idea of AI technology being "hoarded" by one company, taking aim at unnamed competitors who he suggested view themselves as "creating God." Zuckerberg advocated for open-source AI development, emphasizing the need for diverse AI systems reflecting varied interests.

He likened the future AI landscape to the current ecosystem of phone apps, content creators, and businesses, where no single entity dominates. Meta announced early U.S. tests of AI Studio, software enabling creators to build AI avatars for Instagram messaging. These AIs will be clearly labeled to avoid confusion. Zuckerberg stressed the importance of empowering many to experiment with AI, stating, "That's what culture is, right? It's not one group of people getting to dictate everything for people."

Wow great news, so Zuckerberg will be open sourcing all Facebook tracking, profiling, marketing, partner data transfer and data warehousing tech!

No? He's a fucking hypocrite? Say it isn't so!

    • Yea, he's not mad that they're trying to create God, he's just worried they'll beat him to it.

      • Yea, he's not mad that they're trying to create God, he's just worried they'll beat him to it.

Precisely what I was coming in to post. This is just a somewhat prettied up, "Don't create computer god! I WANT COMPUTER GOD!"

    • He backed the wrong horse with his METAVERSE steaming turd, best way to catchup is to try and make others share their work with him.
      • To be fair, "Metaverse" (VR/AR) was pre-covid, as was "Web v3.0", and AI didn't really start to explode until last year.

Open Source AI is a form of "catch up", but he isn't wrong about the "dangers" of "closed AI". More important, what makes AI profitable for him is to implement customized AI features for Facebook, not landing the AGI Whale; which yes, he'd be way behind.

    • If Zuck is using AI for Fb then they have nothing of value, because it's dumb AF. It shows me thing after thing that I block, for example Fox news station after Fox news station. Sometimes I will block a half dozen of them or more in a single day, and I don't spend all that long there (but I do read and scroll quickly.)

On the other hand, Facebook is a major OSS contributor. This is one place where Zuck puts Facebook's investment money where his mouth is.

Zuckerberg open sourced most of their AI stuff. Not only the most used AI frameworks, but also very useful models. I hate Facebook, but you can't deny how much Meta did for open AI (other than what "OpenAI" did).

      • but that's not the big part of Facebook tech that makes the money. He was running his mouth about the importance of sharing tech. He needs to pony up.

What's being expressed is NOT "intelligence".

    Hashtag DERP!

It's showing off how the APPEARANCE of intelligence reveals how stupid and low-trust this crap actually is.

    So it doesn't matter.

      it's 5D autocorrect
    • while true, the appearance of intelligence is all people need for most mundane tasks and requests. Really all it is is a really fancy database query. The person asking "what is my closest well rated hair dresser that I will like" doesn't give a shit whether the answer was from an intelligent human being or from a database lookup based on her past experiences.

I would point to ICL as a reason this is clearly not the case. One can quibble over the level and type of intelligence but clearly a system that can learn from and apply the knowledge fed to it isn't merely some parlor trick.

"That's what culture is, right? It's not one group of people getting to dictate everything for people."

Why is it that the babble from these mush-mouthed "business leaders" is starting to sound exactly like the politicians? (Who sound exactly like Fox News?)

  • And lets not forget 'power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely'. It is almost better if the ASI does have a will of its own and cannot be controlled. Trust in its super intelligence that it will do the right thing.
  • Soooo basically Zuckerberg is admitting they are way behind here as you can bet your arse were they the leaders they would not be advocating for anything shared or open.
  • As much as I dislike Zuck et el they still deserve praise for publicly releasing weights.

  • Jonathan Haidt: “If you think about the mindset of the engineers who built social media platforms, many of them, you know, are kind of Asperger's-like. They didn't set out to hurt people, but they also didn't think about the human consequences of what they were doing.
  • He thinks he's god, so he insults what he considers to be lesser deities.
  • Facebook could easily produce an evil, data sucking behemoth whether the engine is open source or not. The engine by itself doesn't mean much if the raw input, the rules processing input, the LLM, the rules that govern responses are all closed source.

    • Google is proof that you can release a metric shit-ton of absolutely essential, brilliant and impressive major projects under a very permissing open-source license and still leverage them to great a scary dystopia and be a massive threat to society.

Facebook can open-source all it wants, it's still Facebook. Just like Microsoft. I don't trust any of them in the slightest.

  • Zuck doesn't need to make a god because zuck IS god in his own mind
  • "AI Studio, software enabling creators to build AI avatars for Instagram messaging"
An AI avatar of myself FOR WHAT?

Google already has a product called "AI Studio", Microsoft also has a product with that name.
I would not want to be stuck building things that Zuckerberg thinks he came up with.
