Clues To Windows Intelligence Found in Windows 11 Builds (theregister.com) 25

Microsoft seems set to rebrand the AI-powered features in Windows to "Windows Intelligence" even if some of the more controversial elements, such as Recall, are to remain as they are. The Register: Word of Windows Intelligence has circulated for a while, although Microsoft has yet to issue any official confirmation. In October, Tero Alhonen posted what appeared to be options for apps that use AI services. Over the weekend, X user Albacore turned up a placeholder page in a Windows 24H2 build for Windows Intelligence settings. Although Microsoft has made substantial investments in artificial intelligence, AI as part of a brand is a little generic.

Apple's approach, to define AI as being "Apple Intelligence," manages to keep the familiar "AI" initialism while ensuring its own brand is kept front and center. With Windows Intelligence, Microsoft is attempting something similar, although "Apple Intelligence" can be handily shortened to "AI". The recently overhauled Copilot and delayed Recall have sparked debate in the Windows community, yet neither seems likely to be rebranded to Windows Intelligence at this stage. However, Windows Intelligence could represent an umbrella for AI technologies on the Microsoft platform and provide users with a quick and easy way of controlling the access AI apps have to user data and how that data is used.

    Gotta be an oxymoron.

I had exactly the same first though when I read that, but surprised you haven't been marked down as flame bait for point it out.

Same here! I guess many have thought exactly the same thing instantly. I even thought about it before parsing the title. My brain reacted instantly just when it saw the words Windows and intelligence side by side.

    • Clippy: it looks like you are trying for a cute punny memorable name. Can I help?

...that one day, the decision makers in Redmond will wake up to the fact that it's not a matter of branding.

People said 'no' when it was Recall.
People said 'no' when it was Copilot.
People said 'no' when it was Cortana.
People said 'no' when it was Clippy.
People said 'no' when it was Bob.
People will say 'no' when it is Windows Intelligence.

Amongst the things that makes ChatGPT relatively popular is simple: there are enough cases where it works well enough that, when people have a problem that ChatGPT could possibly solve, USERS go to CHATGPT and interact with it. In any other context, ChatGPT doesn't exist. Hell, even Siri is pretty good at leaving users alone unless summoned.

Windows Intelligence is undoubtedly going to end up being a barrier that prevents users from doing what they intend to do, rather than a way to compliment a given task. We already see that with Edge, which has an obnoxious propensity to reassert itself as a default browser and PDF viewer, ask four different ways whether users want it to import data from Chrome and do a bunch of analytics, and tie all of it to a Microsoft account.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the ONLY reason the majority of people still use Windows, is because of Windows-specific software and hardware. Any other addition to the platform is, in at least 95% of cases, something people use Windows in spite of its existence, not because of it. Microsoft will figure this out one day when enough software doesn't run on Windows anymore, but by then, it'll be too late.

  • Windows has no intelligence, nor does Microsoft. They have occasional smarts. Those are different.

Microsoft is too big to ever have intelligence.

    • They follow the trends, they never lead, they are huge so it's hard to completely fail with their huge embedded base. They occasionally get something right out of their pile of trash. That's all it takes to continue on as they are. I don't think that counts as smarts.

  • If this is what they call intelligence we have no fear of Skynet becoming sentient and wiping us out with nukes and killer robot armies.

  • 'Wintel'

Moments after Apple releases "Apple Intelligence," we see pointers for "Windows Intelligence"? I'm utterly shocked by the coincidence. SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

    • Kind of like when Apple created an inferior imitation of FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) and called it ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec).

Watching Apple and Microsoft try to one up each other on the dumb meter is like watching the teenagers Beavis and Butthead were based on. They both do incredibly stupid things. Apple Intelligence was dumb enough. Windows intelligence is like oxymoron squared.

ALAC was a really lame attempt at shoring up the walls around the garden. I wish us hobby recording folks had a really good alternative to Windows and MacOS. I've used Linux for recording, but plugin availability is shit, and forget about iLok requireme

This would simply consist of concentrating on a lightweight, bug free, rock solid OS with no data collection, no forced unnecessary updates and definitely no gimmicks that they flash in everyone's faces for a year or so then quietly drop, and definitely no half arsed copilot crap
    • It was called Windows XP. Unfortunately, M$ can't make a buck off of something that never needs replacement or servicing and never nags you with ads, so here we are.
    • > a lightweight, bug free, rock solid OS with no data collection, no forced unnecessary updates and definitely no gimmicks

      Leave Linux out of this.

  • ...future AI may actually be useful, my prediction is that "Windows Intelligence" will be useless, annoying crap

  • Aren't they blatantly copying Apple here who decided to call their AI Apple Intelligence? Microsoft is so god awful at naming things, I guess we should be grateful they didn't name it Windows 360 Intelligence 12 for Teams.

Life is a whim of several billion cells to be you for a while.
