Indonesia Plans Minimum Age For Social Media Use 15

Indonesia plans to issue a regulation to set a minimum age for users of social media, a move aimed at protecting children, its communications minister has said. From a report: The plans follows Australia's decision to ban children under 16 from accessing social media, with fines for tech giants from Instagram and Facebook owner Meta to TikTok if they failed to prevent children accessing their platforms. Minister Meutya Hafid did not say what the minimum age would be in Indonesia. Her remarks, made late on Jan 13, came after she discussed the plan with President Prabowo Subianto.

How are they going to enforce it? How can social media enforce it even if they try to put the burden on them? For example, we never had any problems getting alcohol as teenagers so I am really doubtful about such regulations.

That's the brilliance of it... they don't.

Law gets passed, PR win, forgotten about. Might be used as a legal cudgel to get bribes and the odd concession out of foreign companies.

This is Indonesia, one of the critical mistakes people with little experience in the 3rd world, especially SE Asia make is assuming laws are made to be enforced, or that laws are enforced. If a Thai cop pulls you up for anything they're just asking for a bribe, so you give them 300 Baht instead of your drivers license.

    • Indeed. Why even have a drinking age at all? It's the parent's responsibility to control their kid's alcohol use.

IMO, this analogy points to the laughably obvious root of the problem. With alcohol, we simply require an official ID with age on it. The state took care of defining the authorization item needed to implement the age check the state requires.

With age restricted internet sites, the state is trying to make a similar requirement, but it is NOT defining nor providing the authorization means needed for the implementation. IMO, that's not a workable implementation; Putting the cart before the horse there. We have single sign on solutions that would be perfect for this sort of thing. Just have the porn site pass authorization off to the states age verification service via SAML and get back the auth status on return. They get in or not, and the state can be responsible for whatever whack implementation they want to use.

Arguments on whether or not such checks should be in place at all are another story, but if we make it the states responsibility for the authorization check, then all those concerns remain with the state. People would lobby their reps, rather than blame the content providers.

Are you in Indonesia? It might be harder to get alcohol there (except for the tourist spots like Bali)

Jesus, why do so many people think laws need to stop 100% of the problem or they're useless. No law does that. Underage drinking laws reduced rates of drinking for those under age https://www.britannica.com/pro... [britannica.com] , I'm sure however they implement this rule it will reduce the numbers of kids binging on social media as well. Mission accomplished.

Not all cultures work like your culture does.

In some countries most kids will simply follow what their parents tell them.

Fix that problem first and everything else will be so much easier.

How about a minimum age for child prostitution instead?

This has nothing to do with "save the children". It's a law intended to get your identification on file so that you can be monetized and tracked.

  • I used to think this was stupid, but seeing what 12 year old's can access now online and the bullshit that is available to them before their brains are ready for it, I don't care if it only blocks 10% of them, it is still worth doing.

The trouble with being poor is that it takes up all your time.
