Theranos Fraudster's Partner Launches His Own Blood-Testing Startup (thedailybeast.com) 31

"The romantic partner of Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes has launched a start-up that sounds eerily similar to the venture that landed his girlfriend behind bars," writes The Daily Beast.

He's incorporated "Haemanthus" in Delaware a year and a half ago (though the company operates out of his neighborhood in Austin), according to the New York Times. Haemanthus appears to have around 10 employees.

From The Daily Beast: California hotel heir Billy Evans' new company is a blood-testing firm that markets itself as "the future of diagnostics," offering "a radically new approach to health testing," according to The New York Times. In other words, exactly what Theranos said it would do. Holmes is even advising the start-up from the Texas prison where she is serving out an 11-year prison sentence for fraud, sources told NPR... Evans has managed to raise nearly $20 million in funds from both friends and established investors in Austin and San Francisco, according to the investor materials.
The Times reports that Evan's company "plans to begin with testing pets for diseases before progressing to humans, according to two investors pitched on the company."

And TechCrunch reminds readers that Elizabeth Holmes said in a recent interview "that she remains 'completely committed to my dream of making affordable healthcare solutions available to everyone.'"

Sure are a lot of stupid people with money these days.

    • The truly stupid are those, who vote against taxing those "investors" enough and for greenspaning them with even more government-printed free money instead.

What Theranos was trying to do was actually quite reasonable, it just didn't pan out, The lying and false data to investors was the real problem, So to go down the similar research approach is not unreasonable, though be buggered if I would trust any of them with my money.
      • I remember a statistical analysis on their claims. They did so many tests on the blood that a false positive was pretty common. That is a big fundamental problem.
        • Having false positives is not a problem on its own. We use tests which have a risk of false positives every day. We just follow up positives with other tests. All tests have a risk of false positives and/or negatives.

          • Never follow up positives with too many subsequent tests, unless you use the Bonferroni correction [wikipedia.org]. In general, a high false positive rate for the first test is not a good thing.
            • A high false anything rate is never good for any test, but money is in charge of health care in America so... You run the cheap tests first and then if you get a positive you follow it up with a more expensive test if it's indicated by the other details of your condition. You don't just assume that a test with a high false positive rate means you're positive. Naturally this is the danger of allowing people to get their own tests, because there won't be any responsible and educated medical professional there

          • I think you missed the point... you are now using a dozen tests with a risk of false positives. It adds up. It means there is a big chance that a (needless) followup is needed.

At this point the super wealthy know to avoid getting scammed by him and he's probably smart enough not to scam them anyway. Meanwhile it's been a while so he can probably find plenty of people to scam but have not heard of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.

The key to these kind of scams is to make sure they don't get so big that you attract the attention of the 1% and then if you do you need to make sure that the 1% understand that it's a scam so that they don't lose any money. As long as you protect those guys you can generally rip off anyone you want these days I mean, we killed the consumer Financial protection bureau last November. Absolute worst case scenario you need to set aside some money to buy a pardon

At this point with all the gutting of the control function of the government that's going on, and with at least 3.5 years more of it on the horizon, it is the best time to try and sell to "investors" as many fakes and scams as possible.

with RFK Jr as Secretary of Health and Human Services, a flake nominated for Surgeon General, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau gutted, and ponzi schemes such as crypto on the rise.
    • I'm reminded of a post [slashdot.org] I read earlier today:

When I hear the word "grift", I know everything about the posters politics and the angle they are coming from.

They've managed to convince people that the concept of scamming - the very words used to describe it - are myths. I guess that's the only place left to retreat to, mentally, when you realize all your heroes are lying to you. The pain must be so deep that merely reading about a grift gets them triggered.

Funny how Valgrus' post is the social media equivalent of Theranos.

Theranos takes a tiny bit of blood, and runs an exhaustive number of tests on it

Valgus reads the word "Grift" and just like Theranos, knows everything there is to know about the poster.

Both process are steeped in fail.
