OnePlus Is Replacing Its Alert Slider With an AI Button (engadget.com) 19

OnePlus is replacing its iconic Alert Slider with a new customizable "Plus Key" on the upcoming OnePlus 13s, which launches the new AI Plus Mind feature that lets users capture and search content found on screen. This update is part of a broader AI push for its devices that includes tools like AI VoiceScribe for call summaries, AI Translation for multi-modal language support, and AI Best Face 2.0 for photo corrections. Engadget reports: What AI Plus Mind does is save relevant content to a dedicated Mind Space, where users can browse various information that they've saved. Users can then search for the detail they want to find using natural language queries. Both the Plus Key and the AI Plus Mind will debut on the OnePlus 13s in Asia. AI Plus Mind will roll out to the rest of the OnePlus 13 Series devices through a future software update, while all future OnePlus phone will come with the new physical key. Notably, the new button and feature bear similarities to Nothing's physical Essential Key that can also save information inside the Essential Space app. Nothing was founded by Carl Pei who co-founded OnePlus.

The alert slider is infinitely more useful than an AI slider...whatever that will be. I'd rather control when I get disturbed than have AI slop shovelled down my throat

Google replaced the quick and easy method of dialing emergency services that had been in place for 15 years with a popup for AI. Google kils all its products, and you are a product they sell to advertisers. They have deprecated you in favor of AI. Please report for recycling when called.

You can use the AI to call emergency services duuuh:

-"This is 911, how can I help you sir?"
-"I am sorry, I can't continue this conversation because it relates to descriptions of bodily harm. Goodbye. click "
      • "Hey AI, I need help with this email"
"I see you need help, dialing 911 for you"

Why don't they just go full enshittification?

"Hey AI, I need help with this email."

"I see you need help understanding what an email is. An email is..."

"NO! I need help sending Sally this email with a photo of her cat."

"Okay. Sending Sally a picture of her pussy."

"AGGGGGH! NO! The picture I just took of her cat doing something adorable!"

"Okay. I will modify the picture to make her pussy look adorable."

          "NO! YOU PIECED OF SHIT!"

"Okay. Sending Sally a picture of your morning bowel movement."

"What the fuck is the matter with you?"

"Would you like to buy some lube?"

Armed intruders have broken into a house and the family starts yelling for Alexa to call the police and then you hear:

  • Strip away your most useful and most unique feature I use every single day?

Sigh. Off to Samsung I go, I guess.

  • the slider is one of the iconic features of the iphone and oneplus phones, but we can't have that in the age of AI
    • Get rid of a Really Intelligent feature, so you can have an Artificially Intelligent one.

    • iPhone already moved the slider to a button. I guess a push button is cheaper than a slider?
My 14 has a slider for silent. My wife's 16 has a button, with an extra button on the other side

    • Apple replaced the ring/silent switch with an action button awhile back. I actually like it better, because I've configured it to toggle "Do Not Disturb" mode, which is more intelligent than silencing everything.

  • I have a OnePlus 13r I just bought and I have no idea what the alert slider is. I think they're referring to the little switch on the left side of the phone that you can flip to three different settings to control whether you mute the phone or not.

Is it supposed to do more? I have to admit when I'm fiddling with it it'll sometimes do some random thing like bring up the keyboard. But I don't exactly find that useful. Especially since it's also toggling the ring settings on my phone while I'm doing it.

It's simply designed to send all your sensitive data to Beijing and tell you it didn't. LOL, I have no idea, my last OnePlus was a 10 and I don't think it had an alert slider (at least while I used it).

  • I trashed my OnePlus devices a few years ago.

This AI obsession is potentially going to crater the entire tech industry. It all boils down to if anyone catches on that end-users don't want AI in everything, they just want stuff that works and is cheap. Add a power-hungry, complex black box to your devices, websites, etc is not the direct route to that ends.

We're being experimented on, because early adopters are not picking up flagship devices anymore. The iPhone first day buys is no longer the badge of honor

    • But guess what, bankers don't trust that AI shit. They're one of the few sane ones. Tech CEOs, politicians, stock traders, and the entire software industry has gone off the deep end.

To be completely fair, none of the others trust AI either. That's why it's being shoved into everything. So that they don't have to rely on it for anything that actually matters, and they can test it en masse on the rest of us. Maybe someday they'll trust it, but right now it's, "Shovel it everywhere and maybe we'll find something it's good at at some point."

I don't know of any end user, from the early adopters to the old curmudgeons, that are happy when useful features get taken away in favor of "More AI,

  • Leave the fucking slider

All constants are variables.
