OpenAI Says It Will Use Google's Cloud For ChatGPT

OpenAI has added Google Cloud as a provider for ChatGPT and its API, expanding beyond Microsoft to address growing demand for computing power. CNBC reports: OpenAI has added Google to a list of suppliers, specifying that ChatGPT and its application programming interface will use the Google Cloud Platform, as well as Microsoft, CoreWeave and Oracle. The announcement amounts to a win for Google, whose cloud unit is younger and smaller than Amazon's and Microsoft's. Google also has cloud business with Anthropic, which was established by former OpenAI executives. The Google infrastructure will run in the U.S., Japan, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Didn't Microsoft have "first refusal" on any cloud hosting? They've said "no thanks" to this, and they're a big investor in OpenAI. Whatever else Microsoft might be, they're no idiots, so they've read the tea leaves a certain way and decided to pass up hosting OpenAI.

This looks like a win/win for Google - a bigger slice of the market, OpenAI get to play with their fancy TPUs and whatnot (which could be tie-in), yet none of the nasty downsides of problems when OpenA

Can we have that as an option ?

You can self host; it's not practical to self host a 70b model today, but AMD has started selling motherboard/cpu combos with integrated GPU that can address all 128gb memory; it's probably possible to self host a GPT4 quality model from last summer locally for under $2000 by the end of 2027, probably much sooner than that, things have been moving fast

GMKTEC have been selling this spec for about two months now, in a small form factor PC.called the EVO-X2 Stick it headless in a cupboard and forget you have it:)

It is all one big clusterfuck of AI. Who's to say the companies are not conspiring, or maybe the AI is conspiring, to achieve Universal Oneness. "AI-Are-Us: Resistance is Futile!!"
