Russia Restricts Calls Via WhatsApp and Telegram (apnews.com) 19

Russian authorities are "partially" restricting calls in messaging apps Telegram and WhatsApp, the latest step in an effort to tighten control over the internet. From a report: In a statement, government media and internet regulator Roskomnadzor justified the measure as necessary for fighting crime, saying that "according to law enforcement agencies and numerous appeals from citizens, foreign messengers Telegram and WhatsApp have become the main voice services used to deceive and extort money, and to involve Russian citizens in sabotage and terrorist activities."

    • The need of the regime to fuel the domestic terror machine, so that lid on any opposition is tight, requires new repressions.

Totalitarian shit's only getting started there.

But it is good that there are putinist parties springing up all over the Western world under Trump!

      • Totalitarian shit's only getting started there.

It was reintroduced by Boris Yeltsin a long time ago. This is just Russians being Russians. When they had democracy, they really didn't care for it. They, as a culture, have need for somebody who tells them who they are and what they'll do. That's exactly what they want, and what they have.

This doesn't mean all Russians by the way, nor necessarily even ethnically Russian at all, rather it means anybody who is culturally Russian. You night recall that Germany and Japan were the same way once -- it ultimately

Just like electing Trump was Americans being Americans, right? Tell me more about this natural tendency of populations in large oligarchic states to swallow without resistance politics that is against their interests.

          • Well Mr Pu-ton, Russia, throughout all of it's thousand year history, has only had liberal democracy for all of about two years.

Last I checked, and much to your chagrin as a fascist, the US remains the only democracy that retains enlightenmen era individualistic liberalism at its core. Everybody else has long since reverted back to collectivism in some form or another.

There is a lot of phone scam that target the Russians. And often the scammers use calls via WhatsApp and Telegram.
As for "sabotage" - yes, your beloved Ukraine use scammers to involve the Russians in sabotage. First, they scam people out of all their savings then they say "we will return your money if you do this and that".
The phone scam that target the Russians has been going on for years and the scammers are mostly located in Ukraine. And it started years before the war.

Making an app to exchange encrypted message is pretty easy, and open source projects are here to serve.
    • you still need to set it all up. Have a server somewhere.
      Harder than it sounds.

Or use something decentralized, like bitchat. that has its own can of worms.

    • Russia has put in place all the stuff it needs to cut off the Internet and replace it with their own, controlled version.

They have the authentication service (GosUslugi, State Services), they have analogs of search, video-hosting, social networks, chats, etc. - all linked to the said authentication. They have a firewall that can reliably shut services off. They are administratively forcing people to move to the government-approved services. They are in preparation to rollout a "digital currency" that will g
