Gmail Will Now Filter Your Purchases Into a New Tab (engadget.com) 11
Google is updating Gmail with a new Purchases tab that collects all delivery-related emails in one place, along with package-tracking cards at the top of the inbox for shipments arriving that day. Engadget reports: Each card comes with a "See item" or a "Track Package" button that you can click or tap without having to search for the original delivery email. The new delivery tab will start showing up in your personal Gmail accounts starting today.
In addition, Google is updating Gmail's Promotions tab, allowing you to sort the emails in it by "most relevant." Gmail will decide which brands and emails are most relevant for you based on what you've interacted with the most in the past. It will also send you "nudges" on upcoming deals and offers that are set to expire soon. You'll see the changes to the Promotions tab in the coming weeks.

Yeah, no thanks. I already set up my own filters to tag email nearly 20 years ago and they still work fine. I didn't use the "Google will decide" categorisation when it was introduced and adding a new category isn't going to make me want to.

I just want all my incoming mail to go into my frelling Inbox. I'll move it myself to a local Thunderbird folder as desired (I don't keep any mail on their servers long-term). Hopefully this doesn't affect people using third-party clients like Thunderbird and/or can be easily disabled, or is disabled if the other auto-sorting setting are already disabled in Gmail.

Don't worry, the feature is completely configurable, you don't have to use GMail's tabs if you don't want them. And no, the tabs don't affect POP3 and IMAP folders.

I'll continue to stick to my traditional IMAP / POP account on my own domain. There is nothing trying to 'think' for me there and I can set up my own filters on my mail client if desired.

Gmail? Fuck no! I have an account because I used to use Android. Then I switched to LineageOS and put Google Play firmly in my past. I sign in once or twice a year to keep it active just in case I need it for something, but I will never use it for anything that doesn't absolutely require me to allow Google's nose into my business.
Google is irredeemably evil and needs to die.

The thing GMail does really, really well, is spam filtering. Nobody else comes close. They almost never get it wrong. For that reason, I route all my domain email through my GMail account. People don't know I have GMail, they think I have a business. But I still get GMail to filter out all the crap. Best arrangement ever.
