An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Indonesia has suspended TikTok's registration to provide electronic systems after it failed to hand over all data relating to the use of its live stream feature, a government official said on Friday. The suspension could in theory prevent access to TikTok, which has more than 100 million accounts based in Indonesia.
Alexander Sabar, an official at Indonesia's communications and digital ministry, said in a statement some accounts with ties to online gambling activities used TikTok's live stream feature during national protests. [...] Sabar said the government had asked the company for its traffic, streaming and monetization data. The company, owned by China's ByteDance, did not provide complete data, citing its internal procedures, Sabar said without giving further detail.

If that deal actually happens (will believe it when I see TikTok themselves announce it officially), it's only the U.S. operations they are buying.
So it will be kinda like how TikTok is a completely different and separate app in China itself. TikTok, USA will be not be the same as TikTok, SEA.

TikTok is a service, not a company.
I'm talking about the legal entity that operates it, ByteDance, which is an offshore company headquartered in one of the tax havens in the Caribbean and actually runs tiktok on servers that are, if I'm not badly mistaken, located largely in the USA and Singapore.
Most of their ownership isn't very Chinese.

Trump's friends are not buying all of TikTok. They are only (allegedly) getting control of TikTok operations in the U.S.
So Indonesia's disruptions of TikTok operating has nothing to do with Trump and Co. Literally a different TikTok at that point.

They have a Cayman company in between so that they can accept money / bribes / investment / whatever and also hide many details they might otherwise have to publish and can own other companies without triggering laws about Chinese ownership elsewhere. Running servers in the US and banking in the Cayman Islands doesn't change the fact that ByteDance is a Chinese company, owned by Chinese nationals and allegedly (but believably) with strong ties to the Chinese gov't.

in America we had a protest (Jan 6), and when the government decided to 'go after' the protesters they requested detailed info from social media, banking, cellphone carriers, and others to make sure no Trump-loving grand mother eluded prosecution - and they got everything they asked for.
In Indonesia they had a protest, and when the gov't demanded info from TikTok the company declined, and now the gov't is pulling TikTok's license to operate in Indonesia.
