CBS News Was Just Taken Over By a Substack (theverge.com) 248

Paramount has acquired The Free Press, Bari Weiss's Substack-born media outlet, for $150 million and appointed Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News. The move effectively places a conservative-leaning Substack writer at the helm of a legacy news network, following the FCC's approval of the Skydance-Paramount merger, which required CBS to feature a broader "diversity of viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum." The Verge reports: Before starting The Free Press, Weiss worked as an op-ed and book review editor at The Wall Street Journal from 2013 to 2017 and later became an op-ed editor and writer at The New York Times to expand the publication's stable of conservative columnists during Donald Trump's first term. She resigned from the NYT in 2020, citing an "illiberal environment."

Weiss started a Substack newsletter in 2021, called Common Sense, which later evolved into The Free Press, touting itself as a media company "built on the ideals that were once the bedrock of great American journalism." As noted in the press release, The Free Press has grown its revenue 82 percent over the past year, while subscribers increased 86 percent to 1.5 million, 170,000 of which are paid subscriptions.

And the supreme Court is absolutely going to let him do it using the flimsy excuse that the terms won't be consecutive. They have already shown repeatedly they could care less what the Constitution says.

Now I don't think the American people are stupid enough to elect Trump a third time but I don't think the heritage foundation and project 2025 are planning to give the American people a choice.

We have Rock solid evidence that approximately 7 million Americans got denied the right to vote using common voter suppression tactics last election.

We also have a couple dozen deep blue districts where Kamala Harris didn't win a single vote. It doesn't take a super genius or a political PhD to figure out what the fuck happened there.

And the old farts that put Trump in for a second term are going to be even more bitter and more angry than they have ever been because their lives are going to keep getting worse and they're going to keep getting older and more bitter and angry because that's what bitter angry old men and women do.

If the left wing can pull their heads out of their asses and actually help the centrists out then we might have a chance but I think the left wing is going to spend the entire time ripping into the centrists and ignoring the fascists just like they did last year.

In a few years as our entire empire collapses we will do whatever he collapsing empire does and invade other countries to loot them and fill our coffers.

That will start with Canada and Mexico and the rest of South america. It's possible China will intercede for South America and trigger world war 3 and it's also possible that they will back off but eventually we're going to take Europe and Russia and then we're going to find out whether or not those nuclear weapons still work.

But hey look over there! There's a trans girl playing sports!

The thing I find humorous about Trump running for a third term, is that Obama would be running against him. I would agree to change the Constitution to see them have a shot at it as long as they had three long debates televised wide and far, and let the best man win.

because his 2 terms were consecutive. See how that works?

Republicans can do anything. Democrats can't. There is always an excuse and they don't matter.

Because 1/2 the people on this forum would let Trump shit in their mouths if it meant a liberal had to smell it.
            • because his 2 terms were consecutive. See how that works?

There is no limit to the number of times someone can hold office. They just can't be elected to it more than twice per the 22nd amendment.

The obvious solution is to make whoever you want to become president speaker of the house and encourage the president and vice president to resign (or impeach them).

          • The supreme court would simply write their usual shadow docket rubber stamped with NO if Obama tried to run.

            • Well, that does not seem fair... lol.

The laws to make the voter suppression illegal or part of the voting Rights act which the corrupt supreme Court struck down.

There are state laws that could be used but the Democrats are competent administrators but they don't have the bloodthirsty rage needed to force through the application of those laws.

If you've ever heard the phrase the machine with regards to Democrat politics in Chicago that's what's needed to outmaneuver the Republicans like that.

Wow! That's amazing that you actually believe that. The mind boggles. You really are afraid of democracy aren't you. When Trump calls up the secretary of state for a US state and asks him to "find me votes" that is what election fraud looks like, had the guy come through for trump. It really is hard for you to believe that many others in the country feel and vote differently than you do. Look, the democrats lost the first Trump election and also lost this last election (at least in the Electoral college which is what counts). You don't hear any of them saying millions of republican votes were fraudulent! You do hear people rightly expressing concern and even fighting widespread republican efforts to gerrymander districts to get more permanent seats. That's not voter fraud but it sure is fraudulent in its own right. It's certainly dishonest and unethical. You do find opposition to republican efforts to make voting harder for people they know will vote against them. Again that's not voter fraud, but it is its own form of fraud and dishonesty.

7 million fraudulent votes? Nope. But definitely 7 million people were convinced in some way not to vote. Which suits you just fine doesn't it. You really don't know what you're losing, do you? And you won't until it's far too late to get it back. I suggest you travel the world a bit. See for yourself what is happening in places like Russia, Hungary, Turkey. Study a bit of history. History doesn't repeat but it sure rhymes. My grandfather's generation fought a war to preserve the very things you are throwing away.

And for anything your man Trump does, consider: would you want a Democrat to be able to use those same powers? I sure don't. If you don't also, why would you want Trump to use them?

            • So yeah I believe real things are real.

I do think the actual cheating didn't put Trump in the White House but it probably did put a few close state legislatures in the Republican hands.

And the supreme Court is absolutely going to let him do it using the flimsy excuse that the terms won't be consecutive.

The 22nd Amendment states that he can't be elected to a 3rd term, consecutive or otherwise.

But perhaps the key word is ... "elected."

          • Hold an election where the Republicans win the Presidency and a majority of the House of Representatives.
Congress appoints Trump as Speaker of the House.
            President dies/resigns
            VP dies/resigns
            Trump = President

Note, the VP by law must be eligible to President, so you can't just elect/appoint Trump VP. But there are no rules about who can be Speaker of the House.

The problem with this is two-fold:

            1) There is no one in the GOP that has anywhere near the elect-ability of Trump. Trump created a cult around him,

        • And the supreme Court is absolutely going to let him do it using the flimsy excuse that the terms won't be consecutive. They have already shown repeatedly they could care less what the Constitution says.

Note that there is nothing in the Constitution that restricts what the Supreme Court is allowed to interpret the Constitution to mean. The Republicans realized this some time ago, leading to their frenzy to stack the federal courts and especially the Supreme Court.

How dangerous is this? Consider that the one part of the Constitution that is usually considered bullet-proof from future amendments, the equal suffrage in the Senate provision. The Supreme Court could simply interpret that provision away. The

This re-enforces my belief that what they do, that they simply accuse that the other person is doing. On a micro scale, I had a girlfriend who out of the blue accused me of cheating on her, and it turned out that she was cheating on me. Base, Basic human psychology. Guilt makes them accuse others of their wrong doings. MAGA's seem to be the Pedo's, and criminals, but instead of living up to it, they simply throw around accusations, and lies, at other innocent people.

I remember as a teenager, when my peers learned about projecting guilt for misdirection. It manifested as farting and blaming others as farting. Variations on the expression "whomever smelt it dealt it" caught on fast (and before I ever heard it in pop culture.)

What is amazing is how many morons there are; who are adults but can't think beyond the teenage mind (the definition of moron,) like Trump... Trump being a teenager who learned the tactic and the followers being teens who have not yet still learned the tactic. Those who do, see it as a clever smart trick:

In seriousness, Trump will never cancel elections. Elections are primary tools used by authoritarian dictators to maintain power and legitimacy. Putin loves elections. Even Xi loves elections. Carefully choreographed elections with predetermined outcomes. Mussolini, like Trump, came to power in a legitimate election. He quickly worked to neuter electoral opposition. But even as he declared himself dictator, he continued to hold elections where he won the vast majority of the vote. Putin too continues to pull in 90% of the vote. Which makes sense when your choice is vote for Putin or volunteer to die in Ukraine (or just rot in jail). Trump's methods are not quite as brutal (yet), but just as effective. Gerrymandering, voter suppression, DOJ persecution of politicians and activists opposed to Trump. We will see Democrat candidates prosecuted (and jailed) before we're done. Remember the strict rule of law is very important to these types of leaders. More and more journalists will simply be sued by Trump himself into silence since he has the whole DOJ on his side; he has no problems using the federal government for his personal attacks and the GOP part of the supreme court is happy to let him.

Other current authoritarian leaders are also employing the same playbook. Viktor Urban of Hungary, and Erdogan of Turkey. It's just that Trump managed to do in less than 10 months what took both of these guys over 10 years to do.

            • Trump is laying the groundwork with a bunch of lies. Trump is desperate to hold the House, as proven by him dictating to the Governor of Texas to give him five more House Representatives. Trump will pull any dirty trick to hold onto power, like Putin did in Russia, with the same result. Iff you let him.
              • Of course he will. He knows he's going to jail if he doesn't stay in power so there's no reason not to try everything. He's too old to outlive his jail sentence so there's no risk of anything worse happening if he fails.

I think there is a problem with that. The Big Two bought out all of the small stations, and now control the narrative of all of the "local" news. This is the real "scandal". The real "enemy" of the USA is Billionaires, and Big Corporations who selfishly have nothing better to do than to figure out how to get poor people to fight each other so they can make even more Billions. The Billionaires also seem to have a lot of help from Russia, China, and North Korea. The solution to this is to enforce anti-trust laws, and to value small business over Big Business. It is to value the individual, over the Corporation.

Diversity of opinion means more right-wing opinions.

The news media in the '90s leaned a little on the left wing for a handful of social issues. Mostly because the evidence is on the side of the left wing cause for the social issues. Trans folk are real, gay people are gay because they're born that way and abortion is healthcare. Those are just facts. And anyone with a education knows that so it's no surprise journalists knew it and reported it accurately.

But take away those handful of social issues and focus on the economics and CBS like everybody else was way right of center.

Go look up how they covered the affordable Care act and the public option. Look up their coverage of Donald Trump in the lead up to his first election. Or their coverage of the handful of left-wing politicians like Bernie Sanders.

Here diversity of opinion is a code word that means they're going to stop reporting reality when it comes to social issues.

That also means science is right out the door because has the saying goes we already has a left-wing bias. So expect anti-vaxxers to get a boost and expect more anti-intellectualism and general attacks on higher education and learning in general.

And holy fucking shit can you imagine how triggered the right wing here at /. is right now by having all this pointed out to them?

That's why the right wing desperately needs to take complete and total control of all forms of media like they did in Russia and North Korea.

If you're a nerd go look up Russian science fiction. Not the cool stuff that came out of the Soviet Union when people were able to evade the sensors but the shit being put out today. It is the freakiest weirdest hypernationalistic psycho right-wing propaganda you have ever witnessed in your entire fucking life.

In 10 years that'll be the only thing you can get in america. You can kiss your video games goodbye. It'll all be freaky right-wing propaganda.

Proof of what exactly? A large number of Americans support Trump regardless of what he does and he just finished telling the military they were going to be used against the enemy within, meaning fellow citizens of the United States. That's not opinion. That's fact. If you support this sort of action, would you also support it if a Democrat president did it? I certainly wouldn't.

A couple of particular things Trump has done have chilled me to the bone. First was when he patted Justice Roberts on the back and said, "I won't forget what you've done for me." And then this meeting with the generals where he made his intention clear to use the military against American citizens who oppose him. If those actions don't chill you also, I don't know what will.

Not a large numbers of Americans support trump, maybe 33%. I know Trump and MAGAs repeat shit like that over and over and over again like propaganda, like they want the sheep to follow them. I don't. It chills me too how the Billionaires control the Supreme Court, and how they have fired most of the leadership of the US Military. Trump does not like people who swear their oath to the US Constitution, Trump likes people who swears their allegiance to him.
          • Not a large numbers of Americans support trump, maybe 33%.

Well, that's still a large number. Large enough to be concerned. And overall I think it's actually slightly larger, and changes with the issue.

I know Trump and MAGAs repeat shit like that over and over and over again like propaganda, like they want the sheep to follow them.

It appears even the MAGAnauts have their limits. I heard about a recent poll that found 57% of MAGA Republicans do not want the ACA's enhanced tax-credits for health insurance to expire. And the current government shutdown is due to a budget that will allow those credits to do just that.

            • My understanding is that a lot of MAGAs are rural, and poor. They hate and envy the Rich coasts like California and New York. They voted to cut off their health care and their food. They seem so stupid to me. But it is what it is. If they keep carrying on, then I must conclude it is a racial "war". With Trump creating a crisis every day, I doubt most people can digest anything that is really happening. It is just chaos.
          • It should have been a scandal that Trump took the oath of office WITHOUT using the bibles his wife was holding. It was a scandal when a Muslim used the Koran to take his oath... and when Obama used two bibles... Many would say he didn't actually take the oath. Not that he couldn't break his oath. again.

            • Trump makes me think that the original Constitution of the United States should be taken out, and if a potential candidate can not hold his hand to his/her heart, and the other hand on the Constitution (metaphorically if not able), and swear an oath to that, then a new election should take place.
