US Expands Facial Recognition at Borders To Track Non-Citizens (reuters.com) 67

The U.S. will expand the use of facial recognition technology to track non-citizens entering and leaving the country in order to combat visa overstays and passport fraud, according to a government document published on Friday. Reuters: A new regulation will allow U.S. border authorities to require non-citizens to be photographed at airports, seaports, land crossings and any other point of departure, expanding on an earlier pilot program.

Under the regulation, set to take effect on December 26, U.S. authorities could require the submission of other biometrics, such as fingerprints or DNA, it said. It also allows border authorities to use facial recognition for children under age 14 and elderly people over age 79, groups that are currently exempted. The tighter border rules reflect a broader effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to crack down on illegal immigration. While the Republican president has surged resources to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, he has also taken steps to reduce the number of people overstaying their visas.

I really hope this is a joke. The 9/11 hijackers all had valid passports and visa. Nearly all the passports were from Saudi Arabia, which is a great friend of Trump and his family.

given that it is confirmed that the cia had knowledge of at least 2 of the guys entering and staying in the country and that the cia hid this fact from the fbi and the department of state, that would be very unlikely.

besides, too many people entering the country to try to make a living didn't cause 9/11. the us propping up terrorists to medde in the middle east did, and once you go down that path no amount of screening at borders will enable you to avoid bad stuff from eventually happening when they turn ag

You've posted a bunch of funny posts today haven't you. The 911 attackers were not only in the country legally but they also had openly enrolled at first schools. Immigration knew they were here. They had their passport numbers written down and visas were issued. All this present policy would have done was to make id of the attackers earlier after the fact.

One of the things about the current hypernationalistic super racist government is it doesn't really give a shit how much damage it does economically.

In the old days they would be afraid of industry lobbying groups banding together and funding challengers and shutting them down.

It is painfully obvious that four or five billionaires are planning on stopping literally everyone else even the other billionaires from having any say in the next election.

        it's a variation on LBJ's statement
“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”
replace "empty his pockets" with "surrender his rights"

      • We've heard all the "oh no Trump, this is the last election ever!" before. It great cause it comes from people who support the party that just skips doing primaries altogether now. Democrats haven't had a real say in their leadership since Obama first ran. I remember them rigging the 2016 primary for Clinton (Debbie Wasserman-Shultz admitted it). The ones screaming the loudest are the worst offenders.
        • Doesn't mean they will stop him this time. You can't keep counting on other people to save your ass.

There are approximately 3,000 billionaires in this country and they are sick and tired of all you God damn consumers pushing them around.

They have decided capitalism has to go. Not all the power and prestige they obtained from it just the capitalism part.

I don't think the rest of the world has realized how absolutely batshit insane we are.

Europe and Canada stood by while Russia basically put Trump in the White House. They knew how much damage it would do but they figured it would kill the dollar as a world currency and maybe they could get theirs in place and if they could my God they would make so much money.

But I don't think any of those idiots realize is we still have this enormous military and a fuck ton of religious lunatics.

A good portion of Americans literally believe Trump is the second coming. They think he was sent by God and therefore is God in the flesh. If you're not deep into crazy Evangelical religion then that doesn't make sense but basically there's a theology where if somebody was sent by God and is the representative of God he has god-dwelling within them and is there for God.

Theologically about a quarter of our country believes Trump is God in a literal and theological sense. This is not an exaggeration. This is the inevitable consequences of their bizarre theology.

Trump has promised to protect them from nukes with the golden dome. Therefore God has promised to protect them. So these people are not afraid of nuclear weapons in the slightest.

The billionaires can very easily lose control. They are not smart they are opportunistic and evil. The religious lunatics aren't smart either but they are thousands of times more violent than the billionaires. Which let me tell you is a lot of violence.

All it takes is a few dead billionaires and we now have religious lunatics who think they are being protected by God and a golden dome and will cheerfully invade Russia and europe. After they get done with Canada and South America of course. China too.

I really really really wish I could get the rest of the world to understand how fucking crazy my country is.

You would think electing a guy with 28 credible rape accusations eight of which are against children would have clued them in but well here we are. One fake election away from a third term of trump and global thermal nuclear war.

none of that should have been necessary. Trump had been incessantly revealing his ignorance, greed, lack of ethics & character and poor business acumen for FORTY years prior to his 2016 campaign.
yet he handily beat every other GOP candidate to become the nominee.
