Dutch Ready To Drop Nexperia Control If Chip Supply Resumes (msn.com) 30

An anonymous reader shares a report: The Netherlands is prepared to suspend its powers over Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia in a move that would de-escalate a fight with Beijing that threatens to disrupt automotive production around the world. The Dutch government is ready to shelve the ministerial order that gave it the power to block or change key corporate decisions at Nexperia, if China allows exports of its critical chips again, according to people familiar with the matter.

If the shipment of supplies resumes and is verified in the coming days, the Dutch are willing to revoke its powers as soon as next week, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Financial issues between Nexperia and its Chinese operations would also need to be resolved. [...] In a sign of easing tensions, the Dutch government said in a statement late Thursday that it expects Nexperia's Chinese unit to resume chip supplies in the coming days.

Why are people acting like nationalizing companies like we are in some 1950s socialist country was supposed to be a good thing.

      • China effectively took control of the company. Either the Netherlands controls it or China controls it. Nexperia is now a state-run entity no matter how you slice it.

Western governments are slowly waking up to their utter fuckwittery in allowing companies in critical industries to be sold to china just so the C-suite and shareholders could enjoy a fat windfall. People have been shouting about this sort of thing for at least a decade but it was fingers in ears time from naive politicians. As this proves - its too late now.

This isn't so much the government stupidity as corporate executive greed. "Sure, we'll move all our critical industry to your country if you provide us cheap labor and let us pollute! As long as I get ever-higher bonuses for higher profits what could go wrong?"

When we objected they assured us, "Don't worry, the Chinese can't do anything but imitate our products, and this is working really well for everyone that counts. You get cheaper products, and we get higher bonuses. What could go wrong?"

When it became obvious that they controlled the entire manufacturing stream for REE and magnets, they changed their tune. "If we get these corporate-friendly politicians elected they'll force China to do what we want. What could go wrong?"

      What, indeed?

  • I.e. just going back isn't enough. There should be a big payout for this move that has damaged the business of the company and financial interests of their owner.

    • Value of the Company, one months interest on that valuation, plus whatever euro stocks gained generally in the last month. That is the minimum. Plus and injunction revealing the decision makers and the evidence used, in the name of full and frank disclosure. Plus any reputational damage the brand has suffered. That is a lot of Dutch taxpayer money. But not that mch considering ASML cut the ties overnight, another spiteful, racial slur on Chia.
  • Presumably, the customers of Nexperia (auto makers) have contracts for the delivery of product. Now the company decides not to honor those contracts. What do you expect the country having jurisdiction over that company and those contracts to do?

The best defense against logic is ignorance.
