British Army Will Use Call of Duty To Train Soldiers (telegraph.co.uk) 23

British soldiers are using computer games such as Call of Duty to sharpen their "war-fighting readiness," an Army chief has said. From a report: General Sir Tom Copinger-Symes, the deputy commander of Cyber and Specialist Operations Command, said the war in Ukraine, where remote-operated drones have become crucial on the battlefield, proved the worth of having soldiers skilled in video gaming.

The Ministry of Defence on Friday announced the launch of the International Defence Esports Games (IDEG), a video gaming tournament that will pit the best of Britain's "future cyber warriors" against military teams from 40 other countries.

When drone controllers come with a teabag button or a speaker to insult your opponents mother.
  • Probably a better example of modern warefare.
  • This is a massive transfer of public resources to a private company, Microsoft. A company that most people believe to be a predatory, unproductive and deceptive monopoly. It's also a company with a weird history of working with Jeffrey Epstein. This is graft and it's absolutely indefensible.

In the US, Microsoft has already been fined over $1.5 BILLION for 23 violations that include price-fixing, polluting, defrauding investors and bribing foreign officials. Not to mention the number of massive, high-profil

  • Back in like 1996 when I was in the army in Fort Irwin, CA, I was the 'Regimental Automation Officer' as an E4. This game me certain privileges. One of those was the ability to put coax capable outside the barracks, which was run to a dozen rooms to create a network. See, in the barracks in the army, you are put in a room with 1 or more of your squad mates, and you are all, whoever is single, are basically in 1 long hallway. So, we'd all open our doors and play duke nukem 3d together. We were all squad

Probably the most searing critic of western military training today is Andrei Martyanov, He is also among the most prolific, posting videos almost daily on shi YT channel (Smoothiex12) and having written four books on the subject. The lack of STEM educated officers conducting operations is one of the most common themes. Another is lack of coherent strategy, due to political leaders' backgrounds: lawyers, humanities, rather than nuts-and-bolts STEM degrees. An awesome curmudgeon who strips the facade of comp
  • When are countries going to have autonomous humanoid robot soldiers? If only someone had made a movie to warn the public of the dangers of robots we wouldn't be in this predicament.

  • What a great way for your nation's military to develop tactics for warfare so that they can be AI analyzed by a commercial 3rd party in the cloud for sale to other nations.

Maybe have the special forces use Strava while you're at it.

  • I don't see any purpose or reason to be using a shitty on rails shooter. There are realistic combat sims like ARMA which would be a better option.
  • Presumably they'll remember that, in real life, you don't get re-incarnated after you get killed, being shot actually hurts, seeing your best mate lying on the ground with his intestines falling out isn't all that funny ...
