Defense Company Announces an AI-Powered Dome to Shield Cities and Infrastructure From Attacks (cnbc.com) 35

An anonymous reader shared this report from CNBC: Italian defense company Leonardo on Thursday unveiled plans for an AI-powered shield for cities and critical infrastructure, adding to Europe's push to ramp up sovereign defense capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The system, dubbed the "Michelangelo Dome" in a nod to Israel's Iron Dome and U.S. President Donald Trump's plans for a "Golden Dome," will integrate multiple defense systems to detect and neutralize threats from sea to air including missile attacks and drone swarms... Leonardo's dome will be built on what CEO Roberto Cingolani called an "open architecture" system meaning it can operate alongside any country's defense systems... A remarkable lack of details.

Exactly what is this proposing to do? Shoot down missiles with a quadcopter?

    • It isn't a weapon, it's an integration project. It uses AI to connects "sensors" to "effectors" https://www.leonardo.com/en/fo... [leonardo.com] . It apparently is the thing that will decide if the threat is better thwarted with Patriots or quadcopters. The idea makes sense to me; as a mere minute or two separates a missile launch from a its target, countermeasures must be as automated as possible.

    • It's not a plan, it's a concept of a plan. And this company would really like to take money from whatever countries it can convince to hand it over, for this concept of a plan.

No amount of AI can make up for the number of interceptors. The entire dome metaphor is stupid and misleading. Layered air defense systems have been around since forever. Slapping the AI and dome label on it doesn't change this one bit. It's just marketing.

The only new quality in air defense are laser based systems such as the British Dragon Fire. But those aren't a dome either.

    • AS I recall, someone tried using chemical SNAP generators with lasers and Neural Networks in the 1980's or 90's.
The system tried to shoot down the moon. Again. Happened before too, with a straight radar system (the Soviets tried? Might have been the US, I forget).

Like a net? For the sky?

    • No, no! Like an Astrodome for the sky!

And speaking of the Astrodome, can we please blow it up already? It's an ugly monstrosity whose time has long, long ago passed.

This is like a dupe in a single post, well done slashdot.

On a good day, Iron Dome is up to 30% effective.

And the USA has no end of "bad guys" to point to, even though they nt actually any threat.
