As far as I know it's a graphics library/API similar to DirectX, but with better support across platforms. The majority of games I've ran in Windows or Linux this year seem to use it.

Will the RAM shortage impact the price?
There have already been reports that chip shortages will impact the availability of chips for home computers, phones, and automobiles. Maybe Microsoft put in a huge order for its requirements and is ahead of the curve.

RAM shortage or no, the days of cheap consoles are long gone as Sony/MS are tired of making losses on them, they can no longer afford to wait 5+ years for a payoff that might never come so they cant afford to keep the hardware as a loss leader.

A console that has the same performance as the Series X but is cheaper with a more conservative form-factor would be the best way to go IMHO. Doing that while keeping the famous backwards compatability would be the right way to go IMHO. And perhaps just release one version and not two, to make it easier for the developers.

In all seriousness, will the Xbox and PS "exclusives" be worth the extra money? For me, not so much. Especially for those who can only own a single device, I think something like the Steam Machine makes more sense simply because it's more capable (not necessarily in graphical performance, but it's an actual computer that you can do work on).
