'Game of Thrones' Movie In the Works (thewrap.com) 41

Warner Bros. is developing a feature film set in the world of Game of Thrones with writer Beau Willimon of Andor and House of Cards. "That's about all we know right now, and as with everything 'Thrones' things could change, but the film is firmly in development," reports TheWrap. Page Six Hollywood was first to break the news and speculated that the story could revolve around Aegon I, the legendary Targaryen king who spawned a dynasty. From the report: The Targaryens have been at the center of all things "Thrones" on HBO, with "Game of Thrones" following Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) quest to usurp the throne, spinoff "House of the Dragon" set in the midst of the Targaryens' reign and recent spinoff "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" following the squire-ship of Aegon "Egg" Targaryen towards the end of the family's run atop the Iron Throne. All, of course, based on George R.R. Martin's expansive book universe.

The monthly shows in the serial were ~56 minutes. So the movie is like 90 minutes so it's probably not a big stretch of effort to produce this. Like the X-Files movies. It's a TV episode and a half.

The average major movie is a bit longer than that; in many cases I wish they were only 90 minutes, but blockbusters these days are usually well over the 2 hour mark, and in many cases heading to 2 and a half hours. E.g. Avengers: Endgame - 181 minutes, Oppenheimer - 180 minutes, The Dark Knight - 152 minutes. So if they were to tend towards the epic end of the scale, as you'd kind of expect for a Game of Thrones movie, it might be more like three episodes long, almost a third of a season.

    • Two things we didn't have when the X Files movie came out: Shooting in digital and AI. The movie we probably be four hours long.
      • One other thing we didnt have when the X Files (series or movie) came out was ... streaming.

The lack of a requirement to conform to a fixed schedule meant that your episodes can be as long as you want them to be - the last season of GoT ranges from 53 minutes to 81 minutes...

Series produced before the 1990s stayed fixed to a broadcast schedule - long episodes were two parters and few and far between. Which ultimately meant that writers wrote that way for a series - and now they are no longer constrained to

    • I love a good 90-minute movie. If the pacing is right, it can suck you right in and hold your attention. But I'm sure this is going to be at least 3 hours... my money's on 3h 36m since it's just going to be a remake of Lawrence of Arabia.

The final season of "Game of Thrones", or the final season of "House of Cards"?

Sad, since both were so good once.

I feel bad for the House of Cards crew, because it wasn't their fault. Still, it wasn't nearly as disappointing as GoT final season.

The show was going downhill at a steady rate after the second season. Even if Spacey were still there, it wouldn’t have been good. The writers hadn't planned for it to go on as long as it did and had created an absolute mess of a show that had to contend with the convoluted narrative it created in the previous season to try to remain compelling. GoT had similar issues where the show eventually overran the novelization and the show's writers didn't have the books to fall back on. Even if they did have a high-level narrative direction from GRRM, the writers for the show did not possess the same talent or care to create something that could live up to the books. Even the novels will have a hard time wrapping up that story. Too many plot lines have been cast out and wrapping everything up in a satisfying way will be difficult even if there's a good ending GRRM is working towards. Dare I say that he needs to kill more characters off?
    • I actually saw most of House of Cards -- the BRITISH original was over all a BETTER series! Did you know there was a great show they simply remade with higher production costs? It was able to finish the story while Netflix freaked out ad wrecked the show because the star had a sex scandal; the genius writer turned out unable to write beyond slight modifications. Idiotic how the villain can't be allowed to actually be one in real life...

Perhaps this movie will be the story of how Paramount took over HBO.

Was the "You may well ask that, but I couldn't possibly comment." quote not a give-away?
But given the original was a set of 4-part mini-series, I would not say "simply" remade.

As for cancelling Spacey, they had no choice.

the situation became impossible for Netflix to ignore when eight current and former House of Cards employees came forward. They described a "toxic" work environment and alleged that Spacey had engaged in a pattern of sexual harassment on the set of the show itself. At that point, keeping him became a massive legal and HR liability.

Such a shame because I really like Spacey's work but it sounds like he got what he deserved.

  • Game of thrones was a good story, but I could never understand why there would be a world with wraiths (white walkers), and dragons but pretty much no other mythical creature. That part seemed contrived to be.

    • by Misagon ( 1135 )

There were many more things than just wraiths and dragons hidden in the shadows.

One thing that I found intriguing with the Song of Ice and Fire novels was that that magic and mythical creatures were not part of people's daily lives, not even the nobles' and scholars'.
They were all myths, where in most cases you couldn't tell whether something was real or imagined.

That way of clouding the supernatural in myth and imagination is one that George R R Martin had used before. My first intro to his works had been

      • But that's the thing... If it were a world full of mythical creatures, it would be impossible for humans to avoid them. The story you described just seems silly to me. Like he made up something just to sell a book.

        • They don't have our technology, they don't have our population, and they don't have our globe-spanning civilization.

Magic faded so long ago that the current population thought it was just stories until magic began to return and mythical creatures started spreading out and coming into contact with humans again - but even then, it took a while because different groups of people were more interested in killing each other than cultural exchange and communication.

I have problems with GoT, but the general lack of

        • > Like he made up something just to sell a book.

Duh, as Ursula K. LeGuin put it “a novelist's business is lying”

    • It started out as a world without any supernatural creatures or magic. Then it has started returning. There is a genre in fantasy of 'the fading world' where magic and wonder is going away for various reasons. GoT's trajectory is in the opposite direction, so maybe that answers your question. I look forward to the horde of snarks and grumpkins arriving from the far north in book 7.
      • Ok I have read the books and I don't remember anything indicating anything was coming back except for the dragon egg hatching. There is a circus in the book and they don't even have mythical creatures. Still say that the fact that they manage to avoid everyone in the whole world except to where they are important to the a story is a big weak point for me. It's a cop out to sell stories.

        • It's almost like the author is making up a story that didn't even really happen to sell books!
        • The White Walkers are a myth that even the black watch don't believe existed, yet here they come. Melisandre is surprised by her power. Thoros of Myr was a drunkard who pretended to be a red priest, yet suddenly discovered ability to raise the dead. The maesters had a joke about getting apprentices to fruitlessly try lighting a black candle as part of their initiation, yet suddenly the candles have started burning. Euron at sea seems to have some sort of Cthullu magic starting.
    • by skam240 ( 789197 )

Off the top of my head there were also wargs, giants, zombies, and what I think were dryads (the ones who made the White walkers). I also remember references to other stuff beyond the wall

    • Game of thrones was a good story, but I could never understand why there would be a world with wraiths (white walkers), and dragons but pretty much no other mythical creature. That part seemed contrived to be.

Besides giants, children of the forest, unseen gods, direwolves, shadows?

  • Is 3 episodes, 15 minutes each.
  • So will the make an unrated soft core porn movie like the shows? Or will they tone it down to get an R?

  • No new ideas in Hollywood these days.
So on the rinse and repeat bandwagon they go, this time copying from TV series.

Trying to compress that much of the TV series into a movie.... they may as well make a 2nd Melania movie.

Its no wonder I have no been to the movies in 5+ years.
  • I read the Song of Fire and Ice books a long time ago.
Geo R.R Martin has produced 2 greats series, the Aces & Jokers, and Fire and Ice.
Some of his TwilightZone stuff was good too. I've never seen the HBO series.
I heard it was bloody but it couldn't hold a candle to the books.
