AT&T plans to invest more than $250 billion over the next five years to expand U.S. telecom infrastructure for the AI age. The company says it will also hire thousands of technicians while partnering with AST SpaceMobile to extend coverage to remote areas. Reuters reports: Rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and connected devices has prompted telecom operators to invest heavily in fiber and 5G networks as they also seek to fend off intensifying competition from cable broadband providers. AT&T, which has about 110,000 employees in the U.S., said the new hires will help build and maintain its infrastructure. The outlay includes capital expenditure and other spending, the company said.
The spending will focus on expanding its fiber and wireless networks, including accelerating deployment of fiber broadband, 5G home internet and satellite connectivity to extend coverage across urban, suburban and rural areas. I'm still getting 20mbps down / 0.75mbps up as the max speed available in the dead center of Hollywood. I wonder if by "infrastructure upgrade" they mean the sidewalk next to their datacenter.

Though, would I even want their service? Dealing with ATT frikkin sucks. It's hell trying to get them to run lines for business customers. One guy to run a line to the building, another guy to run it through a conduit, another guy to terminate the cable, and a final guy to connect it. Usually, at least one of them fails to finish, resulting in delay a

This reminds me of Verizon back in the 90's saying "We're going to run fiber to every house in Texas". That didn't happen. I don't expect them to really do all of this either, probably no more than in a small area, promote that to show how great they are, then silently let the project die.
