Nvidia Is Planning to Launch Its Own Open-Source OpenClaw Competitor (wired.com) 21

Nvidia is preparing to launch an open-source AI agent platform called NemoClaw, designed to compete with the likes of OpenClaw. According to Wired, the platform will allow enterprise software companies to dispatch AI agents to perform tasks for their own workforces. "Companies will be able to access the platform regardless of whether their products run on Nvidia's chips," the report adds. From the report: The move comes as Nvidia prepares for its annual developer conference in San Jose next week. Ahead of the conference, Nvidia has reached out to companies including Salesforce, Cisco, Google, Adobe, and CrowdStrike to forge partnerships for the agent platform. It's unclear whether these conversations have resulted in official partnerships. Since the platform is open source, it's likely that partners would get free, early access in exchange for contributing to the project, sources say. Nvidia plans to offer security and privacy tools as part of this new open-source agent platform. [...]

For Nvidia, NemoClaw appears to be part of an effort to court enterprise software companies by offering additional layers of security for AI agents. It's also another step in the company's embrace of open-source AI models, part of a broader strategy to maintain its dominance in AI infrastructure at a time when leading AI labs are building their own custom chips. Nvidia's software strategy until now has been heavily reliant on its CUDA platform, a famously proprietary system that locks developers into building software for Nvidia's GPUs and has created a crucial "moat" for the company.

  • Some upstart has some success, and in come the Corps like vultures to snatch it away and take it as their own

Nvidia is supposed to be making chips for developers to build on.
Now they also want to now be the developers themselves

Lol right. Your average developer has no idea what chip their stuff is working on, nor should they. Nvidia's success is due to the fact that they didn't just make chips for developers to build on. They made APIs for developers to use.

      • Yeah? The platform Iâ(TM)ve been building enables you to run your tasks on any number of GPUs in multiple locations. You get FULL KNOWLEDGE of where your task is running and on what hardware. Sure itâ(TM)s autoroutes but you set your pieces and cost caps. Why run small stuff on an H100 when a 5090 will do fine. And you do so with any number of models you want and even have an agent to build and orchestrate all this for you Maybe you are all-in on being a rent paying slave to billionaire oligarch
  • When you launch a new genre of software so influential industry leaders are copying the name, that's really something. Peter Steinberger may have all the kudos.

Like Chatrtx, they'll get bored, discontinue it, and move onto newer shiney shit.
    And repeat.

"As of 1/21/2026, this project has been deprecated. ChatRTX is not maintained anymore."

The point isn't to use it. The point is to stop you using the actually open source competitor. They're trying to get you concentrated on using nvidia kit until you're bored of AI, not on some general purpose kit until you're bored of AI. That's it - this isn't quite 'embrace, extend, extinguish' it's more 'announce, divert, extinguish'.

      Less alliterative, but still true.

All these years, I used to read about them refusing to opensource their drivers for FOSS operating systems like Linux or BSD

    • by HiThere ( 15173 )

I didn't see mention of what the license would be. Open Source doesn't mean you're allowed to modify the code.

  • Just like the raspberry pi foundation and arduino, companies will use open source to build and make their product popular. But they will throw those same developers in a ditch when commercial interests come knocking.

  • Does this mean that when NemoClaw goes rogue (as *Claws are famous for doing), I can sue Nvidia?

I'm thinking there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of that happening, but NemoClaw will go rogue. When it does, the negative publicity is going to be huge: whatever Nvidia hopes to gain from this, I can't imagine it will be worth it.

For an actual human, social media sites for "AI" agents seem ludicrous.
    What's next?
Advertising curated specifically to appeal (game) other agents?
Fee for services aimed only at agents?
    Credit cards for agents?
Doxxing bad agents by other agents?

Yeah, this is retarded. Agents scale, humans don't, expect exponential energy consumption.
OOOH OOHH I have an idea, lets build out nuclear power plants to provide energy for all the agents.
    THINK OF THE JOBS.

    Yep. This is retarded.

As companies like Amazon are working on agents that automatically buy shit for you, ads to game other agents are a logical conclusion. SEO also already has to be tailored to AI agents. So yeah.
  • If this this is coded like their drivers, it will suck fucking ass for a century.

I'm absolutely blown away by how dog shit awful NVidia's drivers always are. They also refuse to open source the drivers.

This whole thing is some weird nonsense to try and goose their flagging stock price.

  • Well, they are systems to steal everything from everyone, and chop it up into bits, and sell it back to companies for a price.
