Variety reports: "The Odyssey" leaks have begun, as a high-quality bootleg of the film reached millions of people on X thanks to a viral tweet on July 25. At 2:25 p.m. PT, a post on X reading "Someone uploaded 'The Odyssey' full movie on X. Can you believe it?" amplified a message from a now-suspended account. The message included a high-quality version of the film, as confirmed by Variety, and climbed to over 2.1 million views within two and a half hours. By that time, the streaming film was replaced by a takedown notice, and then the account was suspended...

As of July 26, a few clones of the bootlegged film are available on X, but they've been mostly flooded away by mislabeled files promising "The Odyssey" but actually showing a Rickroll, the longtime internet prank of tricking people into watching the music video for Rick Astley's 1987 song "Never Gonna Give You Up."
The article notes the leak "certainly doesn't seem to have hurt the film's still-surging box office in its second weekend, during which it earned another $87 million," or lessened demand for Imax 70 mm tickets.

      I plan on seeing it in the theater tomorrow afternoon. Don't need a bootleg copy.

      • Same, I don't think this hurts anyone's bottom line significantly. Either people can afford to see it in a theatre and they will, or they can't and this doesn't make a difference because they were never going to spend that money anyway, let them have the bootleg.

        • I wasnâ(TM)t gonna go see it in a theatre anyway. I have a giant 100â TV, a bitchen 9.1 surround sound, and seat craft seats with heat and massage. I would have gladly bought it on Apple TV. I dont enjoy a movie theatre experience. I want to pause the movie if I have to piss, and I spent all that money on my home theatre. I didnt HAVE the option to buy it. So, I saw it like this.

      So, it's going to include all the Greek gods, Scylla and Charybdis, the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso, Sirens, man-eating giants etc. This should ensure it is "historically accurate". Oh, and all the actors will of course be white, not olive skinned.

      Only recognized joke on the rich target? It's a good joke, and well contextualized, but Slashdot still makes me sad these years.

      But considering all the kids Musk starved to death, sadness is Musk's main business now and perhaps that suggests his next acquisition target will be Slashdot?

      I think there are actually two paths to extreme wealth. One is pure luck. Rich parents. But Musk's parents weren't THAT rich.

    Every movie that comes out has multiple torrents and various other sites you can download it from. This has been going on since the 90s since CeNTRoPY used to hookup the telesync SVCDs sometimes before the movie was released. One could download it from XDCC bots on IRC or if you were connected on a topsite or relay site some courier used FXP to directly transfer it to from another FTP site. Not much has changed except it's on torrents, darkweb, or other bootleg sites. Is the point it was posted on X?

    • From TFS it appears that it was posted on X and was taken down only after someone in control there were done watching it.

    • The article makes no mention of the source. But everything about this sounds like it's just the CAM release from LuCY [predb.me]. Which has been available for around a week and a half now.

      In which case, yeah, the only thing novel about it was that it was posted to a more publicly-visible website.

      The difference is that the copyright owners can't do much about a magnet link or The Pirate Bay, and even if they could there is no money to recover. Twitter, on the other hand, has a lot of money.

      Twitter is already being sued for copyright infringement by music companies.

    • nobody cares, but there's no such thing as bad publicity. I have seen this news piece everywhere now, which makes me suspicious that they did this deliberately so this movie gets puts on the headlines. Still not seeing it until it becomes available on piracy websites
      • That makes a lot of sense. Get peoples interest by posting a crappy CAM bootleg (not even telesync for good audio) and make them want to pay to see it in 70mm IMAX or whatever the highest end option at a theater near them is.

    • The reason why people should care is in this case the minimum statutory damages are like 50 times the infringer's market cap. There's a chance that X ends up owned entirely by comcast.

      • Ordinarily I'd cringe at Comcast, one of the most hated companies in America, owning anything...but it's currently owned by Musk. So that would be an improvement. Especially if Musk took a nice financial hit.

    The definition of quality is quite relative. For a film shot in IMAX format I don't think event the bluray release should be considered "high quality" much less a bootleg, regardless of how good that bootleg may be.

    • normaly first you get the cam normally the worst one with shady ads and all. then someone take that and cleans it up you acully get a decent picture but crappy audio. then you get the streaming version.

      • I never understood the fascination for ruining something for yourself simply because you can't wait a few weeks for the streaming version or a bootleg of the bluray.

        But it reinforces the idea that piracy is not a lost sale. The kind of person who was happy watching a telesync copy was clearly not remotely interested in seeing the movie, since evidently they barely saw it when they were watching it.

    • I didn't mind the lack of breaks (3h would be my limit though), and there were no disruptive people in the big cinema where I watched it, but I *did* mind the obnoxiously loud sound in that IMAX theater. In most action scenes I couldn't wait for them to be done so my ears would stop suffering.

      • Where I live, there's a lot of entitled, disruptive people. People talking loudly during the film, on their phones, sometimes even taking calls, people kicking your seat, or hanging massive coats on their seats, right in front of you...

        I think I'm mentally done with the communist approach to film watching.

        • Sounds like exceptional cases all rolled into one... Maybe pick different times/days? But if you got an adequate setup at home and you're really mentally done, fair enough. I prefer home for comfort and most importantly subtitles... damn modern audio mixing

          • Just a modern 50 inch qned TV with a sound bar. Nothing fancy setup-wise, but nothing beats peace and quiet, and a sofa that perfectly remembers your buttprint.

            I'm one of those people who can't stand subtitles. They distract me too much.

          Most of the theatres here have extremely uncomfortable seats. A small handful of them have decent seats and charge a premium for them.
          They also try to sell you large drinks, which cause you to need the toilet, so you either sit there in discomfort needing the toilet or miss a chunk of the movie. If the movie is long then your drink will go cold (or warm) and not taste good.

          At home i have a comfortable seat, i can adjust the volume to suit my needs, i can pause the movie if i need to visit the toilet or get

        • Go to a matinee showing during a weekday or early on Sunday and it is pretty great compared to a Friday or Saturday evening when it is just a date night activity

        Yeah, I agree. The rock concert sound levels is one of the reasons me and the family don't go to the cinema any more. The knuckle dragging grunts who think they own the cinema, can do what they like and no one else matters is the other.

        • I mean I've been to rock and metal concerts and I don't remember my ears suffering that much (except Motorhead!). On top of that, I'm not sure that the speakers were handling the volume that well. But yeah I wish there was some feedback mechanism to the cinema on that front.

      • They definitely cater to the tinnitus crowd these days. The last movie I went to see required earplugs and it was a normal theater. Hell, on my tv at home I run my sound through a studio compressor because of dialogue sitting at -20db and and music being +20db.

      • You can get high fidelity earplugs [eargasm.com] that reduce the loudness without reducing the quality of audio. Rock performers often use them to protect their hearing.

        It's kind of annoying that these earplugs are necessary, why not just turn down the volume? But anyway this is the situation we are in, and I recommend using earplugs to protect your hearing (whatever's left of it).

        • I've heard of those and a friend has some like those, but custom-made for his ears, and he swears by them (he's a musician). I might try one of those next time I plan to go see an IMAX film, sad indeed

      I think the harder thing for more people is the cost. When I was a little kid our babysitter could take us to see Star Wars (or other movies) at the downtown Marcus discount theater for $0.25 a kid. Even making minimum wage she could take a car full of kids (us and our friends) for a buck. Then she could get soda and popcorn for those kids for less than $5.

      As a teenager I could take a girl out on a date for less than $6 for a Friday night movie, then add another $8 for soda, popcorn.

      Today my wife and I spend $40 on tickets and another $30 on popcorn and soda.

      Don't get me wrong, Marcus does a pretty good job at making it a comfy and technologically impressive experience. The seats are nice, far nicer than the plastic "school theater" seats of my childhood. That makes a long movie far more tolerable than in the 1980's or 1990's or 2000's.

      The concessions haven't changed, the popcorn hasn't really changed if you go to the right Marcus theater where they still pop everything on-site. That's where the cost bites the most... but it's also about the only place the chains can make any money.

      Just saying... The chains (Marcus at least) have tried to adapt to the times. For most people, especially parents and kids, it's the cost that's more painful.

      • It's true that even when you adjust for inflation, a movie ticket is more expensive than the good ol' days.

        ...but it's also true that the experience is so much better. The stadium seats. The sound. The legroom. (Sure, there are jackasses talking and texting but I tend to be able to choose movies & theaters were there are far fewer of them.)

        What's also different is I don't have to go to the movie theater to see a movie as much as I did in the good ol' days. Back then my only options were to pay for

    I owe her 2 rom coms now. TBC if that's a fair trade.

    I will watch it again, alone on a wet afternoon with some libations to Athena. I found The Return [imdb.com] a better production in respect of performances and examination of Odysseus and his Queen. That was a footnote in the new movie, but some of the scenes were epic, the cyclops, the pig polymorph was very spooky.

      i don't understand why so many people love his movies. Interstellar was mid, tenet incomprehensible, oppenheimer mostly boring. I expect the Odyssey to reach peak boredom for me.

        The outrage at his casting choices are possibly as bonkers as Tenet was. A masterclass in walking backwards.

        Interstellar was memorable. And a go to if I have trouble sleeping. No one moaned about the honourable Cockerney Caine being cast as a professor of anything other than pulling birds, robbing banks and shooting Zulus

        Interstellar wasn't just mid, it was utterly moronic... if you were listening to the dialog and couldn't see the screen. For fuck's sake "It's necessary"? And this, the most exciting part of the film, is about rotating your ship at the same speed as the one you want to dock with? Ooh, I'm on the edge of my seat! (Also, just coincentally the ship that's completely out of control and had 1/4 of it blown into space is rotating around the airlock but sure "most scientifically accurate movie evah")

      • Some things about his movies are very good: the cinematography, use of practical effects over CGI, scale, and good scoring. Sometimes he does drop the ball; while the score on Interstellar was epic, the one in Odyssey was bland and did not really mesh with what was going on on-screen. And he's a bit of a one-trick pony, with a rather dark and depressing tone in most of his movies. Works in Interstellar, didn't really help the Odyssey, ruined the Dark Knight. And his convoluted way of telling a story. T

  • The guy absolutely want to record his movie in a format that almost nobody can watch and his public watch his movie on their phone in a crappy app.
  • And other social media. It's just as bad as the Suckerpunch spam in the 2010s and the 300 spam in the 2000s. If I wanted to know about the latest movies, I could go to the box office of my local Cinema.
  • With the amount of whining I heard about how this version of the Odyssey was woke race treason engineered to poison western civilization I would have expected Elon to move faster than the copy cops when it showed up on his precious everything app. Is he developing a tolerance to the stimulants? Renting out datacenter space making grok sluggish?
  • This reminded me when a friend gave me a bootleg of Star Wars Episode II. It was a low quality video that couldn't even fill up my tiny CRT monitor without looking like garbage.

    Some movies are just made to be watched on the big screen and in this case the biggest screen you can find. I have a killer home theater setup as well as a VR system that will make a virtual movie size screen. Even then, it just can't match the in theater IMAX or Dolby Cinema (Tall) experience for a movie like the Odyssey. Not to
