Google Unveils Pixel 11 Lineup (techcrunch.com) 30

At its Made by Google 2026 event today, Google unveiled a slew of new devices, headlined by the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Here's a breakdown of the company's latest smartphones, provided by TechCrunch: Pixel 11: The standard Pixel 11 gets a redesigned camera bar that is thinner than the one on the previous generation. Google says the new camera bar is more than 40% thinner and now uses an all-glass surface that stretches across the width of the phone. Google is also increasing the base storage to 256GB, doubling the previous starting capacity. The starting price for the new model is set at $899, reflecting a $100 increase compared to the Pixel 10. This price hike comes with the decision to drop the 128GB storage option. Plus, the ongoing RAM supply shortage plays a part in this increase.

Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL: Google is making durability a bigger part of the Pro lineup. The company says the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL have improved drop resistance and a new anti-scratch display coating that provides more than twice the scratch resistance of the Pixel 10 Pro models. The Pixel 11 Pro starts at $1,099, compared to $999 for the Pixel 10 Pro.

Pixel 11 Pro Fold: Google says the new foldable is nearly 10% lighter and almost 1mm thinner than the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It also has slimmer bezels, a 48-megapixel main camera, and 30x Super Zoom. The company is also building on the IP68 water and dust resistance introduced with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold uses a glass-fiber composite back cover designed to better withstand cracking, while a redesigned hinge offers additional protection for the inner display. Google says the changes make the model three times more durable than its predecessor. There were also several new Gemini-powered features unveiled at the event. Google is expanding "Live Transcribe" to support American Sign Language, using the Pixel Camera to translate signing into text in real time. A new voice-input feature called "Rambler" is designed to understand natural, unstructured speech, including filler words and run-on sentences. Google is also integrating "Circle to Search" more directly into the Pixel Camera for identifying objects, translating text, and asking questions about what users see.

        Even moreso last I looked, but that doesn't make these a bargain...

        • I've owned both iphones and pixel phones. Usually I find the prices to be comparable. What is NOT comparable is after sales support. If you buy a brand spanking new device soon after it comes out, you'll likely get a few more years of software support with the Apple device. For the Pixel, you can probably pave over the OS and run Lineage OS on it after Google support expires, but it's on you to do all the work to get it there and if you brick it you're on your own.

          • I don't think most people who can afford a thousand dollars for a phone plan to keep their phone for longer than the 7 years Google will support their Pixel devices these days, nor do they want to buy a phone which has been out for very long. The poors will accept last year's iPhone, or an even older one, or the Shitty Edition bundled into their phone plan.

            For a non-Pixel device you'd have a solid point, as most other Android phones have abysmally short support lifespans. Then again, many of those phones ar

            Apple has longer support but software is only part of the story. Apple started the trend of planned obsolescence in phones by sealing in the batteries and making them hard to service & repair. It would be a lucky phone that managed to survive 5+ years without being consigned to the trash or a drawer because it's not economical to have it repaired.

            It will be interesting to see what Apple do when the EU starts forcing user-replaceable batteries and repairability in phones. Maybe they'll be dicks by drop

        Apple's event is in early September, but the new iPhone prices are also expected to go up (unless Apple decides to cut their profit margins substantially). Component cost increases are raising prices, and that trend may not slow for a few years (thank you AI).

        The only slightly good news for those who want a Pixel is that unlike the iPhone, the Pixels tend to start seeing larger discounts sometime late in the year (or early next), for those that do not need the latest and greatest right now.

          Well recently a certain product’s price doubled to quadrupled over the last year. We all know which product is to blame: labubus. That or RAM, SSD, GPU, etc have multiplied in prices because of AI. Who is to know?

            1. OEM producer of a phone will not set their margin below 30%.
            2. Input components have gotten more expensive, raising the cost of good sold.

            What happens to the price that a customer pays when multiplying by a percent? What does that do for revenue / profit? Oh, it goes up without you doing any additional work that you were already doing.

            I can't imagine why things are so expensive, can you?

      I was thinking about trading in my Pixel 7 for an upgrade this November during the typical sale they have, but not at that price. Maybe it's time to go back to Motorola. Anyone have a good experience with recent Moto models?

        You're thinking of Nexus. Even by the end of the Nexus era, Google had shifted towards the flagship device market. Pixels have always been aimed at the flagship market.

        If you want a cheaper option, look at the Pixel "A" series devices. They launch in the spring and generally have the prior year's CPU, less RAM, cheaper cameras and more plasticky build quality, but the prices are quite a bit lower. They still offer the same seven years of OS updates, though.

      Less RAM.

      The much hyped light on the back only comes on when you talk to AI or get a phone call from someone on your favourite contacts list, that's it. It's not even a 2017 era notification light.

      The cameras got a mild upgrade, but still aren't on a par with what Chinese vendors are offering at a lower price.

      Even the free AI subscription was cut from 12 to 6 months.

    • One problem with the smartphones in USA is that the Chinese were chased out, so there is significantly less competition now. Huawei devices were as good as Nexus/Pixel but left a decade ago. So we have been stuck with just Apple/Samsung/Pixel.

      Another problem with the US market is that most customers don't pay for their smartphones upfront. Instead, they are used to hook up with expensive cellular plan contracts and end up getting their phones for "free" or half price. So nobody is actually shopping for phon

        Yes. Always have. If you buy on a payment plan from someone other than Google they may keep it locked until you pay it off.

  • Looked on their store, trade in, perfectly good working 9ProXL, $550.00 For my usage, the "telephoto" camera isn't a big deal, as is any of the camera upgrades. I only use my phone camera for snapshots in work related things. For everything else I use my d-slr. The goofy notification light on the back to me is useless. I never lay my phone on its screen anyway. Faster processor? Shoot, I probably never go anywhere near the limit my current phone can do. So, unless their sales don't go where they want a
  • I've never seen a phone launch be so anticlimatic as the Pixel 11. Virtually all of the reviewers were meh about the price hike, the underwhelming new "features", the lack of RAM and the sense that Google have crapped out a very mediocre device. Google are part of the reason RAM is so scarce right so I guess it serves them right.
