Dyson Made a Camera-Equipped Toothbrush That Flosses For You (theverge.com) 87
Dyson is entering oral care with the $499 CameraJet, a smart toothbrush that uses a tiny camera and on-device AI to detect gaps between teeth and automatically blast them with mouthwash while you brush. Regular toothpaste and mouthwash will work with the CameraJet, but Dyson plans to sell its own non- or low-foaming formulas designed to give the toothbrush's camera a clearer view inside your mouth. The Verge reports: Just below the brush head is a tiny camera with a 100,000-pixel resolution and a strobing light. The toothbrush's AI analyzes 28 live images from the camera every second as part of a feature Dyson calls Gap Optical Targeting, without storing them on the device or sending them to the cloud. Within 100 milliseconds of a gap between your teeth being detected, the CameraJet emits a cone-shaped blast of mouthwash to clean out the space. Dyson uses a wider blast than what water flossers typically employ so it can effectively remove plaque with less pressure, making the CameraJet's flossing mechanism gentler on enamel and gums
The replaceable brush heads use a combination of softer outer bristles that safely clean along the gumline and stiffer inner bristles that are better at scrubbing away tooth stains. The brush head oscillates nearly 1,000 times each second while the angle of oscillation is constantly changing to improve the effectiveness of your brushing. Pricing on replacement brush heads isn't known, but each one features an RFID tag so the CameraJet can track usage and alert you when a replacement is needed every three months.
To ensure its mouthwash reservoir can effectively pump no matter how the CameraJet is held -- even upside down -- instead of sticking a tube into the reservoir, there's an air bladder inside the tank that slowly inflates to fill empty space, minimize air pockets, and maintain a constant pressure. An elaborate docking station recharges the toothbrush and can automatically fill its built-in 12.5ml mouthwash reservoir in just three seconds.

Something tells me that the people that would benefit from this are not going to be buying a $500 toothbrush. They probably don't even own a "cheap" electric toothbrush because they long ago realized that it's a backdoor subscription for replacement heads.

I recently replaced the motor in a Dyson ball-style canister vacuum. Compatible motors are cheap and plentiful on Aliexpress. Other than the (many) deeply recessed screws which required long thin screwdrivers it was easy enough. Thing is built like a tank, but I consider that a good thing. I have not had to replace the battery in my cordless one yet, but I'm expecting to soon and that too looks simple, so no complaints here.

Dyson ran out of good ideas some time ago. Their vacuum cleaners are still good, but overpriced. Even there, they copied the dust detector laser thing from Japanese manufacturers. The stopped making washing machines because they weren't profitable enough, and abandoned their car. Their snot canon, the weird headphones that filter air and blow it in your face, sending respiratory diseases in all directions, never gained much traction in the market.

[amazon.es] it's also very low pressure and barely does the job, needing 2-3 refills per session and the water tank is impossible to completely drain, the whole design is just stupid, and the damn thing also cost a small fortune)

i'm not a dentist, but indeed ymmv. flossing removes more plaque between teeth, but water flossing works where teeth meet the gums which can be hard to reach with mechanical floss, and using a pick for that could go wrong specially if you have sensitive gums. and sometimes you simply can't floss (because of braces, dentures, etc) which is my case (had to learn the hard way!). i simply don't let plaque build up: baring exceptions, i fast most of my time and have 2 sometimes 3 small meals in the span of 2-4 h

I've been told to angle the tooth brush so that the bristles jam up underneath the gum line. Before I did that (and flossing) I had gum problems, now they're great.

I found brushing with a Hydroxyapatite -containing toothpaste fixed my tooth sensitivity.
I think the best thing after a meal is to rinse out your mouth with water. You can brush later

Though, really, between flossing, brushing and rinsing with diluted H2O2 (1:1), I have found that I don't really need to use the waterpik all that often.

That said you don't need a $500 toothbrush. $50 maybe, and I'm not sure what it's like in the USA, but in Europe my health insurance company actually bought the electric toothbrush for me, so it was even cheaper than those 25c toothbrushes.

After owning a couple relatively expensive rechargeable toothbrushes where replacing the soldered in batteries was onerous I eventually settled on one that runs on 2 AA cells. They are like $15 on Amazon and use the same brush heads as the $300 ones. No Bluetooth, but I manage. If I was so motivated I could use rechargeables in it too.

The biggest problem is people who don't understand how Lithium batteries work. A typical lithium battery has a cycle life of around 300-500 deep cycles these days. The average $50 toothbrush lasts about 2 weeks on a single charge. That is ... 12-19 years life for your battery.
The problem is people who leave their toothbrushes permanently on charge, it's a quick way to destroy lithium batteries. My father and I got the same toothbrush at roughly the same time. His lasted only about 2 years before he complain

It's funny, I still have yet to need to replace the battery in my old e-series SoniCare. I still take that thing on vacation without a charger and it lasts at least a week. Though finding replacement heads has moved to an online-only affair.

It's an electric toothbrush. You're not supposed to rub it across you teeth back and forth. You're supposed to move it slowly from one tooth to the next. 100ms is more than fast enough.

Sonicare are crap, I've been through 3 of them, the seal on the brush shaft fails every ..single...time, then water gets inside and smokes the internals. Gone to OralB and never looked back, they just work.

My Sonicares last for several years each (been using them for decades). But I am also careful not to wet anything but the brush head. It is a common failure point to have water enter through the shaft.

No argument Dyson makes a lot of high-dollar products that just attempt to be a little better/different than the norm -- and won't impress people who are always looking only for the lowest cost solution.

Flossing and mouth wash is not the same. Mouth wash has zero documented clinical effect and is in essence just a waste of time and money. Flossing works because of the mechanical contact - same as brushing. Therefore this product is completely, ludicrously stupid.
