OpenAI Unveils Always-On AI Agent 'Dots' (bloomberg.com) 63

In addition to the company's GPT-6.1 Astra announcement, OpenAI announced always-on AI agents called "Dots" that can proactively use a computer and connected apps to research, draft documents, write software and handle other tasks on a user's behalf. "OpenAI said it would roll out Dots to paid users starting Tuesday," reports Bloomberg. "Initially, OpenAI said, each user will have access to a single 'dot' that can act as an assistant. Over time, the company expects users to manage a slew of them." From the announcement: Dots are frontier intelligence that have your back. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, they have their own cloud computer, learn from feedback over time, and can work towards your goals 24/7. Through our ecosystem of plugins, they can readily connect to over 4,000 apps, giving them the tools to help wherever you need them.

Your dot is always within reach, whether it is through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. You can ask questions, explore ideas, and give feedback along the way; or you can simply hop on a voice call when you need to talk something out. The more you work together, the more your dot learns your preferences, how you think, and what good looks like to you.

The magic of dots is when they bring you work done the way you would do it, sometimes before you even think to ask. With dots alongside you, ambitious ideas and projects you haven't had the time or support to pursue start to feel achievable.

The future of economics is people who have money will participate in the economy by owning the means of production (AI). And those without a stake are going to be excluded from further participation. The ultimate rift between rich and poor. Even the security to protect the property and safety of the rich will be automated, so even bootlicker security jobs aren't going to be available to the working class. It's about time for cops to wake up and realize what side of the rich-poor divide the economics of technology is going to force them onto.

        "Excluded" with extreme prejudice.

They fed the gullible masses the propaganda about machines doing all the work, but left out the part where the now-useless workers would be Terminated.

      • That sounds like the future of economics ... if unchecked by democracy.

You seem to almost be saying that like it was a bad thing....?

            • It's only a bad thing if you're opposed to fascism, war, child rape, enlarging the deficit, unaffordable fuel prices...

          • The USA has always operated as a oligarchy. Abolish the electoral college and we can talk about democracy.

            • Pure Democracy, 49% slaves is entirely acceptable.

The point of the electoral college and the Senate is to keep the cities from running roughshod over the countryside.

By the way, make sure you really understand the difference between an oligarchy and a plutocracy.

Instead, the evangelicals ran roughshod over democracy.

By the way, make sure you really understand the difference between an oligarchy and a plutocracy.

Plutocracy is just a wealth-based oligarchy, but I don't believe in a pure anything. There are lots of kinds of power.

              • the electoral college was about preserving slavery.

            • The core of the problem is all these politicians are obsessively looking for someone to hate. It doesn't matter if it's based on race, or trans, or gingerness, or whatever. They choose someone to effectively bully, and a good 30% of the country goes along with it as the latest target. (Some go along with it because they like to hate on others, and some go along because they don't want to be bullied).

If we can stop doing that, the oligarchy will effectively lose their power.

Democracy is the reason we're ruled by foreign psychopathich billionaires who want to Terminate us. They don't care who you vote for because they've already bought both sides.

Quite possible. I'd expect my current employer to add more responsibilities to my role first, there's so many 'somewhat important' activities floating around that are simply not done right now due to lack of resources to do them. I would expect natural attrition to perform most downsizing, and the top of the list of people leaving would be those that can boast they automated their (and others) role and can perform similar work at their next organisation.

Now that sociopath neural networks exist, what we need now is to have them enabled to do anything, unsupervised and unaccountable. We can sell it by saying it "can work towards your goals 24/7" when we really mean it can help you destroy the people you hate, until it destroys you instead.

If an always-on AI can do "productive" things on your behalf, doesn't that show a failure to identify work you need to do? It's questionable why such tools should even exist, but we all know how quickly these things will abuse their access to do unacceptable things. As intended by their creators.

        • Sure, but that example has nothing to do with with the technology examples I and the OP gave. If you were trying to make a deeper point than providing a counter example that doesn't seem to fit, then please elaborate.

I learned to touch type on an Apple ][e because elementary school had them. But my parents didn't make the kind of money it took to buy an Apple or Mac back then, so I ended up on the PC track. By high school and college all my schools had PCs because clones were cheap and software was plentifu

A few kilowatthours later, the Ai delivers a present for you, wrapped with a ribbon. There is the new fantastic thing you imagined. Optimistic scenario: everyone has such an AI. Would we be happy? Pessimistic scenario, the happy few have one. Are they happy?
Somehow some of us will still use it to try to dominate the other and ruin it for everybody. Can we include a therapist in the model, on
    • When money is your god, there is only one way to be happy by some definitions (sociopathic perhaps): exploit others to have more wealth and power.
AI is a potentially powerful tool for exploitation. And that alone explains to me why there is tremendous market forces and investment behind it. The vast majority of the wealthy are not involved in investing for altruistic reasons. They may want to change and reshape the world, but not primarily to make the lives of ordinary people better or easier, that is only

That's just a cute nickname for Skynet.
