Old Hearts Become Biologically Younger When Transplanted Into Younger People (sciencealert.com) 70

alternative_right shares a report from ScienceAlert: It might be reasonable to think that there's an indelible link between the heart and the body it resides in -- the processes that affect one inevitably affect the other. But a new preprint, uploaded to bioRxiv and yet to be peer-reviewed, suggests that this may only be true up to a point. Take the heart out of the body and put it in a new one, and something incredible happens. The transplanted heart begins to take on the biological age of its new owner. Older hearts transplanted into younger recipients appear to become biologically younger, while younger hearts placed in older bodies show signs of accelerated aging.

Or take a closer look at blood transfusions.
A biblical verse states the life of an organism is in its blood. It is blood that carries the nutrients, signalling molecules and even free mitochondria that probably signal the transplanted organ to turn younger. The bioelectric environment also matters, but probably not to the same extent as blood does to the transplanted heart.

      • There's also a novel that states that the lifeblood of an organism can be used to bring eternal life to certain parasitical creatures (who otherwise can't survive in sunlight). It's probably worth washing the transplanted hearts in holy water before inserting them into the recipient.
        • A novel idea, but Mr Stoker did have some folk legends to borrow from. Personally, I have no stake in that matter, no fascination with holy water or crucifixes and certainly don't believe in silver bullets. Sunshine, however, is a powerful disinfectant and garlic makes bread tasty! (So, are there no Italian vampires?). It's interesting the actual name of Jesus is never used by the characters in Bram Stoker's Dracula -- his name is the singular artifact of power in the new testament.

There's an entire grey-market industry of rich assholes traveling to third world countries for "young blood" transfusions.

Funny thing is, it apparently works and the current study is just one more bit of proof. One quick trip to Ecuador and bam, 70+ year olds get six months of being as healthy as a 30-something again. Hell, I have to admit some mornings I'm tempted to try it myself, though I'm nowhere near wealthy enough to fly halfway around the world every few months.
        • If only they colocated some research scientists at the transplant locations and gave the staff/patients incentives or discounts to round up the data.

I mean, extending the lives of super-rich people is noble and all [youtu.be], but if you could collect the experimental data to help the unwashed masses, well, then, now you've got a whole new way for youth to support the lives of the elderly other than through Social Security taxes.

        • I heard about that. I wonder what the long term effects of that will be on those 70+ year olds. Just look at all the risks listed here:
          https://my.clevelandclinic.org... [clevelandclinic.org]

Interestingly, doctors tend to avoid blood transfusions even in the case of heavy bleeding. Instead, they immediately use intravenous fluids to rapidly "fill the pipes" and restore blood pressure and organ perfusion.

          • This is the question been pondering for awhile. What is the effect on the body of mothers due to the large amounts human growth hormone produced while she is pregnant versus childless women?

            • I plugged that question into ChatGPT. Apparently, HGH is normally produced by the pituitary gland. But during pregnancy, a different version of HGH produced by the placenta takes over its role. It reorganises the mothers body until deli ery. Placental growth hormone disappears from maternal circulation very rapidly after childbirth, generally within about an hour. The mother's usual pituitary growth hormone system then resumes its role.

      • Yes, the life is in the blood. And there are dimensions of this that we are still discovering.

        rich people are not psychopaths

Being a psychopath/sociopath is a key ingredient in getting rich. Generally some opportunity had to come along that required a disregard for the welfare or fairness to others. A lot of folks stepped away from an opportunity because they didn't think it was right, but a wealthy person likely seized upon some such occurances.

      • But I *am* a rich psychopath and I resemble your remarks.

Extreme left: paranoia, extreme right, incredibly naive towards white males. Root cause for both? Inability to think beyond black and white. Tip: start with variables of 2 bits. It takes some time to get used to, but it will make your world more nuanced and beautiful. Then try 4 bits!

    • 1. Get off my lawn!
      2. (swap hearts)
      3. Join me on my lawn, my precious!
    • Why wait till it wears out? Just let your original heart youth up a bit and then swap them back. Repeat as necessary.
      • The longer you leave the old heart in a young person, the younger it gets. That way, you don't have to go through the transplant surgery as often.

A similar thing was found in the 1970s with liver cells, a chemist named Loren Pickart first isolated GHK – a string of three amino acids Glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, after noticing that bathing liver cells in the lab with plasma from younger adults helped revive them.

GHK-Cu has potential for regenerative medicine in many areas, however as it is not patentable it has not seen any proper human trials. It has been used in some expensive skin care products where it has been shown to be effective but that is all. It would be nice to see some proper clinical trials,

    • Why is it not patentable? Natural substances in generally are not, but one can patent the application, the isolation process, etc, etc. All you need is a good patent lawyer and you can make money with this knowledge (or at least find someone who is willing to invest in the clinical trials).

I'm pretty sure that's too simple an answer. There are several lines of evidence that suggest much of aging depends on the blood (at least in mice). Which doesn't imply that there aren't other parts.

(One experiment I read about grafted together the blood steams of a young mouse and an old mouse. The old mouse appeared to get younger.,)

Upon reading the paper I quickly realized, predictably, that it's all baloney. By new heart they mean methylation patterns imprinted in the DNA. Is methylation anything to give a shit about when it comes to the heart? Most likely no. At best you could fool someone like Peter Thiel I suppose. What makes your heart give out is muscle wasting and narrowed or cholesterol'd up blood vessels .. calcification at the valves, fibrous scar tissue. The methylation pattern in the cells don't do anything much, fucked up methylation can cause cancer I suppose. When was the last time you heard of anyone dying from (primary) "heart cancer"???

Ironically, restoring the old methylation pattern may increase, not decrease, the risk of cancer. Here's why. When you get older, the risk of a cell's DNA accumulating damage increases. Sometimes, this damage can provide the mutations to make the cell cancerous. In order to prevent that, the cell silences gene expression by methylating sections of the DNA. Reference: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/a... [nih.gov]

Now when you go and do a fool thing like "restore the reduced DNA methylation patterns typically found in young cells" (without repairing the damaged DNA) .. you're actually undoing the bodies protective mechanism and actually increasing the risk of cancer.

Isn't that pretty much the standard tech business plan nowadays? Not to build a sustainably profitable company... but to pull something together that offers the best potential for a quick buyout in the shortest amount of time.

      • Given that the world's resources are already well beyond maintainable carrying capacity, we need to reduce population at both ends of the age scale.Yes, the middle, too. Neither adding an additional 50 million births per year, nor keeping people alive until 130 helps toward this end. But a drawdown in human population must occur at some point, and inevitably will, one way or another. The amount of misery that it entails will be up to us dumb human beings. I have little hope we'll choose the sensible path.

          It's called birth control.

          • There is a big effort to discourage, limit, or ban birth control. Usually religion based because that is how they boost their numbers; not conversion. They are not so confident they can honestly grow their numbers so they resort to conditioning and indoctrination. I like to point out to people: if they are really able to think for themselves, then why are they in their parents religion?

    • Old people lingering longer instead of passing away has no benefits for the species, only emotional benefits (which will vary according to circumstance!) for the old (most of) who instinctively fear death.

The species thrives because individual lives expire. Most lives contribute nothing so prolonging them does nothing useful for our species. Death really IS natures change agent.

Fear of death does not in any way make death somehow wrong.

That one actually has some science behind it. Not enough to trust, but some.

    • Luckily, our fascist government will work hard for "the corporations" (mega rich who own/run them, who still fear death) to discover why there is something to young blood and make some kind of drug... they've probably not found it already because they are fixated on the blood of youths (maybe some Epstein like appeal?) when it's actually something else creating the benefits which only slightly shows up from young blood transfusionsâ¦

  • The articles do a good job of establishing "what" but a poor job of establishing or even speculating on "why", which I think is the deeper question. If as they measured, older hearts become younger in younger bodies, knowing why that happens may give us clues on longevity treatments.

But it seems like the only consideration is that this gives them more organs to choose from for transplants.

  • If you are an old guy with a failing heart, don't go for a heart transplant - go for a full body transplant.
