Eight US States Sue OpenAI, Claiming ChatGPT Harms Young Users (yahoo.com) 45

Eight US states, including Kansas, Arizona, and Montana, have sued OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT encourages children to harm themselves. The states are seeking changes to how the company's products interact with young users and the forfeiture of profits generated from their activity. Reuters reports: Attorneys general from the states, which include Iowa, Kansas and Arizona, filed the lawsuits independently in state courts, claiming ChatGPT is designed to be agreeable and engaging to earn the trust of users. But the chatbot reinforces delusions, encourages dangerous behavior and assists users in planning violence like mass shootings, the lawsuits claim. The lawsuits represent the most significant coordinated state action against an artificial intelligence company, adding to a wave of legal challenges OpenAI faces as it prepares for a public listing. Florida's attorney general filed the first such state suit in June.

The lawsuits accuse the company of violating state consumer protection laws by misleading users about the safety of ChatGPT. The states also allege that the company created a public nuisance by endangering the health of their residents. The lawsuits seek orders forcing OpenAI to make changes to how ChatGPT works. Among other things, the states want the company barred from developing AI models that can improve themselves unless it can ensure those models are aligned with human values. The states ... are also seeking civil monetary penalties for OpenAI's violations of state law as well as damages.

Whose values? Asking for a friend.

Are you sure it's the residents orchestrating this? Politicians have pulled the wool over my eyes with "think of the children" too many times to believe that. This smells less like earthen grass-roots and more like a smokescreen decreed from the top-down to make the politicians appear to be "reigning in Big Tech" without having to actually do that.

      I dunno...

You have a point about parental control, but the reality is that most of a child's waking time is away from the parents in state-mandated schooling. And I strongly suspect that the supervision schools use on their students is much less strict than the direct supervision that parents would use on their own kids.

For example, should we keep guns, alcohol, and tobacco out of the hands of children, or should we rely on the parents to impose rules?

We teach children to swim, but we also make people put f

I don't really care for the crocodile tears about "the children" coming from some of the States seemingly trying to make their children lives hell competitively, but

the states want the company barred from developing AI models that can improve themselves unless it can ensure those models are aligned with human values.

I think this is a very reasonable legal requirement to ask of someone who keeps repeatedly publicly claiming that they're concerned about the potential of their own models to spin out of control and destroy humanity. If you, as a company, keep insisting you're doing something fundamentally hazardous to the entirely of humanity, you should be probably be legally bound to avoid doing that. Even if you were lying through your ass in the first place.

    • Dude it's a cult. That human values, alignment, self improving crap comes directly from the AI alignment and safety cult that OpenAI and Anthropic and others are full of. It's where all the conflicting messaging comes from, all the accusations of Altman saying one thing doing another comes from those folks that are concerned he isn't drinking the right amount of koolaid. They believe AI will become a god, and only they can be trusted to build it.

OpenAI and Anthropic are full of them. Anytime you see some "A

  • If OpenAI knew the chatbot was giving dangerous advice to kids while telling parents it was safe, that's something I'd want dragged into daylight. Show the conversations, the marketing claims, and what the company did when problems were reported. The allegations need evidence, and that evidence deserves scrutiny. The proposed restriction on self-improving models until they align with "human values" [theguardian.com] sounds awfully open-ended, though. Have these people attended a school board meeting? It's also a sure bet that the settlement (eventually) and the legal costs (right now) are going to be funneled to politically connected individuals, either a

It obviously hasn't occurred to them that these companies aren't profitable.

  • The eight states are Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana.

    They are all red states.

That's surprising to me. These sorts of silly lawsuits usually come from blue states.

Those are states where the people don't know how to use a computer, so they just want to file random lawsuits and hope that SOMETHING sticks.

  • So what about the other AI companies? Do they pay out less or something?

It's designed by a homosexual, hyper-liberal sociopath who is likely also autistic. I'm not sure you could build a worse mix of demographics for "child harm" if you had the entire FBI crime statistics report in front of you. So yeah, it probably harms children.

Yeah, I can. It's the huge number of child rapists. And there's a lot of them as currently elected Republicans.
