Baraka pointed out to us that Packet Storm Security will be reopening today. Let's all hope that risk mitigation company Kroll-O'Gara does as great a job on Packet Storm's renaissance, as our old friend Ken Williams did. " We talked about this recently - here's hoping that the new is even better then the old.

    I would guess that having a Risk Mitigation company at the helm (or at least providing hosting) would make Packet Storm much less likely to be shut down.

    Question: How much control will Ken WIlliams maintain? Will this still be his site? I know that the last time we talked about it [slashdot.org] they talked about running it the same way as before "but with a staff". But my questio is, will Ken WIlliams choose this staff? be on the staff? etc....

  • ...until John Vranvrroom figures out that Securify is really nothing but a bunch of pimple-faced intruders who are perpetrating massive breakins and distributing pornography, then provides his "evidence" to law enforcement and essentially libeling his competitors.

    I'm glad to see Packet Storm back, but the thought of seeing another mudslinging attack by the AntiOnline Homies makes me cringe...
  • Really flashy page, but it loads fast enough, even as slashdotted as it presumably is right now.

    At a glance, I'd say all the old files are still there (searching for the latest 1000 files gives you just what you asked for... not that it's fun waiting for Netscape to render that), and it's all presented well.

    Their search engine's pretty basic in that you can't give terms higher or lower precedence, or exclude them entirely, unfortunately, but maybe that will change. (If I want to know about holes in screen, I do a search for "screen"... and the first thing returned - with four stars - is "nt.screensaver.token.txt"... so I try "screen -NT", same first choice, more NT stuff in the list below.)

    The archives page is very cool, pulling important stuff out into categories that are easy to browse, so maybe it's not really necessary that the search engine be perfect.

    This, google's release [slashdot.org], and my new Palm IIIx all make me happy. :^>

    To quote Ken Williams himself from his letter on the old site: "Unfortunately, I will not be with PSS in the future, however, because I have recently accepted an extremely enticing offer elsewhere in the Information Security industry." Good luck, Ken!

    Oh, and I think their worries of being shut down are now far less not because of the nature of the current owners, but simply because the owners are hosting the site themselves rather than relying on the good graces of Harvard University to do it. :)

    No, they won't get shut down because the /jp directory is missing, which resulted in getting the site shut down the first time.

    Also, the /webboard and /bofh are gone, which, IMO, actually were related to Security...they said they were only gonna rm the stuff that wasn't along the lines of security, which explains /jp, but doesn't really explain the missing board and bofh stuff.
