2001 ApacheCon Europe Cancelled 3

ApacheCon Chair Ken Coar sent out the following notice today: "Due to financial considerations beyond our control and unrelated to past ApacheCon conferences, our conference producer has decided that they are unable to produce the upcoming ApacheCon Europe 2001 in Dublin. With only three months left before the conference was scheduled to begin, The Apache Software Foundation has decided that it is in the best interests of attendees to cancel the show now rather than attempt to find another conference organizer for the Dublin event."

"Our current plan is to begin evaluating proposals by conference organizers for upcoming ApacheCon conferences, both in Europe and the U.S. News of future events will be posted to the ApacheCon announcements list and on ApacheCon.com when they become available."

  • Having done 400ish person conferences in the past, I'll note that 4 years is not an outragously long lead time in setting a conference up and making sure it works smoothly.

It would take an experienced staff of 3-4 working nearly full time to make it happen in just three months. That presumes that nothing like T1s are needed. I have no idea what Dublin's T1 install time is, but 10-12 weeks in the states is about par. It also presumes that the staff have worked with this conference facility before and know the people well enough that they don't resort to a contract this and a contract for that.

Conferences don't have to be a pain in the ass to run, but the industry has done everything possible to make sure they can squeze every bit of cash from the organizers that they can. Oh, you want air in the conference center? That will be XXX more. ;-)

"Camelot did not pay my fee or expenses for ApacheCon Santa Clara, way back in April, and called today Friday, July 13, at 4:00 am, to say they are closing the company. Camelot appears to have traded while insolvent, a situation that is illegal in some countries."

It seems like they have plenty of time before the event to find a new place to host it. I guess places for events in Dublin are hard to find/booked well in advance.
