ApacheCon Europe'08 Live Video Streaming

os2man writes "ApacheCon Europe 2008, the official user conference of the Apache Software Foundation will be held 7 April through 11 April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Some of the tracks will be broadcast via live streaming: System Administration (Wednesday), Web Security (Thursday) and Web Services and Web 2.0 (Friday). There's a 99 euro registration fee for the tracks, although all keynote sessions and the opening plenary are available free of charge."

We need to start coming up with more legitimate uses of Bittorrent, because "My favorite Linux Distribution" isn't going to be enough to keep legislation/judges ruling Bittorrent illegal because it's "filesharing"

This is a great way to do it, offer all the keynote sessions on bittorrent.

Until now we've had a few bands release their album on bittorrent, and that's about it.

Here's a practical, legal use of BitTorrent:

I'm developing a system for TomTom to distribute digital maps (on the order of 1 or 2 gigabytes each) via BitTorrent. It will save a lot in bandwidth costs, because we distribute millions of maps over the internet. By their very nature, digital maps work well with BitTorrent because people in the same geographical regions all want to download the latest map of their region at the same time.

You mean like the World of Warcraft Patch system or, more recently, CBC Television's release of a show using bit torrent? Its happening slowly but surely, and the more who do so and see the benefits the more that will.

Plus i'm sure your first responder there is not alone in making use of bit torrent for legitimate commercial applications.

Not good enough in my opinion. Why? Because CBC, and ESPECIALLY Blizzard, would probably not put a up a fight. It'd be cheaper for them to just pay the extra bandwidth.

except CBC is already putting up a fight against Bell's throttling through the current bent on stories they're running. You can be damned sure blizzard would fight to the death if p2p legislation or traffic shaping started impacting their profits in a measurable way.

Please don't impose your ignorance of what BitTorrent is used for on all of us. Some of us know that the protocol is used for plenty of legal distribution. Also, about this notion that the protocol will prevent "legislation/judges ruling Bittorrent illegal", can you name instances where this has happened?

You can already purchase software (yes, legally - from dlgamer [dlgamer.com]) and download it through Bittorrent, as long as the client supports the necessary authentication method. Bittorrent has long grown up and has many legal uses, it just takes a while for people to realize (even slashdot users it seems).

Perhaps slashdot could use a submissions detailing how far bittorrent has come, that covers all the latest in legal uses of bitorrent, so we can go use them.

I download linux torrents just so I can spend 24/7 uploading them, just to prove bittorrent has good uses.

Is there a Firefox plugin that runs an actual torrent client, actually downloading the chunks in the background and not just browsing the tracker?

If BitTorrent were just another protocol Firefox handled, along with HTTP, FTP, etc, and people didn't even need to know they're downloading "a torrent" any more than we need to know we're downloading a GIF, or JPG, or MOV, or WMV, BitTorrent use would skyrocket, the way that HTTP skyrocketed on the popularity of integrating it with a browser for the more popular

Both BitTorrent DNA [bittorrent.com] and Red Swoosh [akamai.com] have JavaScript APIs for starting, monitoring and controlling BitTorrent downloads. The actual BitTorrent client runs in a service process, which you talk to through "http://127.0.0.1:port#".

The JS libraries just rewrite the URL of the file you want to torrent so it goes through the proxy. They also allow you to monitor and control the progress of the downloads via a ReST interface to the proxy that returns json or xml.

Well, I haven't even used BitTorrent much, because every time I've tried, it's been extremely slow. So I'm not the right one to write such an app - though I'd be one of those who'd use it if it were fast and easy. BTW, is there a good commandline client for Debian/Ubunutu that does nothing but quickly download the file when I pass the .torrent URL on its commandline?

The Korsakoff [korsakoffamsterdam.nl] is by far the best place in Amsterdam to find long haired freaks like Linux programmers and system administrators, with great music and wild dancing. It's at Lijnbaansgracht 161, clockwise from Leidseplein, open every night, till 4:00 AM! I had a great time there last night -- it's best on Friday and Saturdays of course.
