GoPro's Next Adventure: Virtual Reality and Drones 33

stowie writes: Rumors have been swirling for some time that GoPro was developing a drone. Well, now it's official. Speaking at the Code Conference, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman announced the company's plans to come out with a quadcopter in the first half of 2016. Woodman said "the quad is in some ways the ultimate GoPro accessory," adding that the company is testing software that will wirelessly sync up GoPro footage to the cloud. In a deal announced with Google, GoPro is also offering a virtual reality system using 16 cameras and Google software.

Sir, i would like to inform you that your comment is "off-topic" (but i would like to congratulate you... it is "first post"!).

I would like to congratulate Slashdot for letting it happen rather than trying to stifle it. People have to remember in every organisation there will always be psychopaths attempting to subvert it for their own personal benefit under a masquerade of the greater good.

Back to topic, Go Pro seems to be in a rush to grab profits fast before the ban they are accelerating kicks in. I wonder if this is not some subtle marketing move to accelerate the ban on drone because they have no money in it. So imply the

You're a bit paranoid, so let me explain what will happen should a ban occur, the government, the police, the corps will all be allowed to fly "drones", all that will ever get banned are everyday people like myself that fly them for photography (crops, NDVI, real estate, and scenic) and fun.

The people I know in this hobby are extremely safety conscious, sure there are a few assholes out there, the assholes also drive cars, ride bikes, own guns, etc...

Trivia note, radio controlled craft have been in existence since 1898, flying cameras in radio controlled airplanes... well since radio controlled airplanes have been around. (1920's. or earlier).

This "drone" paranoia is proof positive of the media manipulation people suffer under.

Yes indeed. It's also funny to me that RC helicopters are now called drones. I always thought drones incorporated some sort of autonomous or semi-autonomous activity, like circling a particular area. But now it seems anything that is RC and flies is a drone.

Slashdot (news for nerds, stuff that matters) DOES NOT "letting it happen" (yet?!), and *some* people *may* think that Slashdot IS "trying to stifle it" - with "IT" meaning to report the story!

          I agree - so?

I am glad that we can stay on-topic - not like this anonymous coward who wrote:

SourceForge has since removed the adware from GIMP-Win: https://sourceforge.net/blog/g... [sourceforge.net]

[updated on 28-5-2015] Since yesterday, SourceForge Gimp-Win mirror downloads only the original software without any offers. We also invite the Gimp-Win developer to take back control of the project if that is his desire, while respectfully asking that he maintain any project updates or allow us to do so.

The ultimate accessory is the one you shoot drones out of the sky with, a.k.a 'stick'. I have a few of those, and a dozen shot drones already. One buried drone owner, too.

  • I figured that this new idea would be a drone following you, like a 3rd person shooter game. Then after about 4 hours; refuel it and move on.

Yes, they are cheap pieces of crap. But they caught on. Now even bicycle helmets have mount points for them.

And they're cheap. So much so that many TV shows that are reality-based often have a "GoPro budget" because they know they're doing to destroy a dozen or more of those cameras in the course of filming the series.

One wonders if they buy retail boxed GoPros or they just say they're from Discovery channel and just get a pallet of them shipped sans boxes, acce

They will attempt whatever they think they can get away with. Morality and respect don't enter in to their decision-making process.

Been building and flying "drones" (multirotor helicopters) for a while now, and I am sick to death of the "GoPro look".

They should have added a model with adjustable lens packages and a zoom, that would be interesting.

The one it's fly through? That term doesn't generally need to be clarified when speaking of technology; but this is one of those exceptions. :-P
