Facebook's AI Algorithms Accused of Generating Terror Content (securityweek.com) 26

wiredmikey shares a report from SecurityWeek: Facebook is unwittingly auto-generating content for terror-linked groups that its artificial intelligence systems do not recognize as extremist, according to a complaint made public on Thursday. Researchers at the National Whistleblowers Center found that the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda were "openly" active on the social network and that Facebook was automatically creating "celebration" and "memories" videos for extremist pages that had amassed sufficient views or "likes." The Whistleblower's Center said it filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on behalf of a source that preferred to remain anonymous.

The definition of Artificial Intelligence sure is low these days. A routine that takes some pictures and spits out a video slide show with some background music, zooms and fades is AI now huh? I have an AI doorknob in my house. When I insert a specially crafted piece of metal it recognizes the shape in the metal as uniquely identifying me. It then allows me to actuate the lock and gain entrance to my residence.

Anthropomorphizing sofware doesn't make it AI.

    • Sure, but if the author of this clickbait turd-sandwich didn't pretend this was AI, they wouldn't have been able to write their idiotic screed and get it shared around the internet and posted here. With all of the layoffs at various media companies the last several months, it's hardly surprising that everyone is just a little more desperate for page views. And when the actual intelligences of the world can't spot the difference, can you really blame the person who wrote it? It's just one AI abusing exploita

The algorithms are truly neutral by nature. They do not know any of.our twisted morals du jour. Whoever yoh are,. you are just the same, and accepted for who you are.

It's us who utterly fail to deal with a part of our society, that wants things that some define as terrorist and most accept to be defined like that.

You know... where we cour actuall find out why people get the idea of that being a good idea, finding out how to cure it, and also even being prepared for the possibility that we ourselves are the

Instead of whining about networks not policing things enough and then whining about censorship when they police things too much let's just hold the actual parties on the account responsible for what they do?
  • Just put these terror groups in the other database that blocks right-wing and conservative content, that system works surprisingly well.

So well, in fact, it even doubles as a targeted (at conservative/libertarian) partisan election-interference system. FB has removed certain UK MEP candidates' personal accounts and even their official campaign accounts which are not even owned/operated by said candidates for...reasons. Mostly because they are popular anti-Establishment types outside the Labour/Conservative/Green corrupt mainstream UK parties.

So, what do we do about FB's active and partisan election interference? I mean, we investigated Trum

  • So it sounds like Facebook is totally serving the antivaxxers and the terrorists: fringe idiots. Can we please destroy Facebook? It's an enabler of the worst of humanity.

  • ... very shady and unscrupulous product. But then, was this not to be expected of facebook or what?

  • Time spent clicking like on facebook updates is time not spent making bombs. I speak from experience, here - as a former terrorist I have spent the past 10 years wasted on facebook like the rest of you.
