Facebook Suspends App Pre-installs on Huawei Phones (reuters.com) 59
Facebook is no longer allowing pre-installation of its apps on Huawei phones, the latest blow for the Chinese tech giant as it struggles to keep its business afloat in the face of a U.S. ban on its purchase of American parts and software. From a report: Customers who already have Huawei phones will still be able to use its apps and receive updates, Facebook told Reuters. But new Huawei phones will no longer be able to have Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram apps pre-installed. Smartphone vendors often enter business deals to pre-install popular apps such as Facebook. Apps including Twitter and Booking.com also come pre-installed on Huawei phones in many markets. Twitter declined to comment and Booking did not respond to a request.

The Facebook app is useless to me anyway, so are may of the other apps too that are outside the standard OS.
Let me as a customer decide what I want to install and stop bloating the device I have bought.

That really is a huge point in Huawei's favour. Huawei just wasn't on my radar until now, but not being force fed facebook makes them worth looking at.

Especially if all of your data is directly delivered to the Chinese Gov instead of the NSA. Such a win!!!
At least that way the NSA has to buy my data, and can't just ask nicely.

Not true - my G6 Play has bloody LinkedIn pre-installed.
Worse still, every OS update clears the Disabled state on it...

There are some complexities to the problem.
Facebook usually pays the company to put it on there. That way the company can sell the product at 10% less then the competitors who don't offer it preinstalled.
Secondly Facebook is a commonly installed app, so have a preinstalled version for must customers so they can start using their phone right away.
And compared to the Apple App Store, the Google App Store, there are a lot more 3rd party ripoffs so it is safer to have common Official Apps preinstalled, for cus

The only point i disagree with you on is the limitation on removing it. If the customer does NOT WANT the app; what business case is there for outright preventing the user from removing it?
What's the point Zuckerberg? Why is it in your contract with Samsung that it shall not be removable? I'm not going to use it, and seeing it there unremovable just pisses me off and makes view your company even less favorably than I already do. What do you gain from making it unremovable?

At this rate Huawei could soon be producing bloatware-free phones running open-source Android builds, or perhaps even some kind of GNU/Linux OS...the US is turning them into one of the most interesting smartphone manufacturers in the world!

A lot of companies wants to stay out of the limelight of politics. However they often get caught between two sides, so no matter what they choose it will seem like a political decision.
Dicks Sporting Goods decided to Stop Selling Guns, This angered the Right, however Guns were such a small portion of their business anyways, stopping selling them, probably in the long run has made sure the company will be out of politics. It isn't big Tech, but the Chaos of the Trump Administration. Businesses liked to work with the US and its companies, because we were predictable. Changes were gradual, well planned out. Companies followed the contracts well, and customers knew what they were getting.
Despite the populous explanation that our workers are paid too much, thus are products are too expensive to be competitive. The extra cost normally goes into quality and consistency. If it was just price, Our economy would had tanked generations ago.
With the Trump administration, and if Trump Wins the 2020 election, I expect more businesses will no longer work with the US, as they know they will get 4 more years of chaos.

I use Facebook, but what has been burned into the ROM takes space even after upgrading. Those pre-burned apps can at most be disabled, not removed, and that's stupid.
