Facebook Secures Digital Rights For ICC Cricket Events (techcrunch.com) 32

An anonymous reader shares a report: If you're a cricket fan, you will be visiting Facebook way more often in the coming months and years. The social juggernaut announced on Thursday it has partnered with the International Cricket Council (ICC), the global governing body of cricket, to secure exclusive digital content rights until 2023 for global ICC events in the Indian subcontinent. As part of the four-year deal, financial details of which were not disclosed, Facebook will show post-match recaps and in-play key moments and other "feature content" of the matches in the Indian subcontinent. The exclusive rights are limited to the Indian subcontinent; elsewhere the company will carry post-match recaps. Facebook said it hopes to serve "hundreds of millions of cricket fans" through this "unprecedented" and "ground-breaking" deal. A Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company won't be live-streaming the matches in any market.

Imagine if you are a fan and do not have FB account - now you are pressured to create one to access this content. Yes, this is Cricket and far-away places, but what if FB secured digital rights to Super Bowl?

Umm, turn on your T.V.? Visit a sports bar if you don't have a T.V.?

      • From Facebook.

Which includes installing a "smart licensing device" (spying system) in your bar, display large FB ads, pay for a FB PRO account, and have a bouncer who checks that everyone has his FB account and the accompanying anal probe camera. ;)

    • Not as big of a deal as you think.

Back in the Day CBS, NBC and ABC were the only TV Stations available, when they started to show the Super Bowl, they often did that at the expense of those who didn't have a TV and wanted to listen to it on the Radio. There wasn't that big of an uprore about it. Because people would either get a TV, or go without. Later Fox got on board in 1997 for the Super Bowl, which didn't have the same coverage as the original three, however there wasn't that much of an problem, as

Yes we have the Hipster who will proudly say they don't have a Facebook account and will never get one. But we had people like that for TV's as well.

Nothing "hipster" about not wanting to sacrifice your security by getting a Facebook account, that's an absurd loaded comparison. You would have to be a *Nazi-paedophile* to think that!

/ Using inappropriate loaded insults to give fake weight to a statement is fun!

    • They might get more fans though if they make it easier to watch. I don't have cable, and I only get a few channels with my antenna. The amount of sports I watch has gone way down, because there's almost no way to watch sports live without paying a lot of money. If they provide a way to watch sports that's easy then people will watch. The MLB has done a few games on YouTube this year. I tuned in for a game and loved the format. No commercials, Easily watch on any device I already own. Good quality stream

Can I assume you get at least the 3 major networks on your OTA antenna?

If so, on Saturdays, you should be able to catch college football games most all day on one or more of the big 3....and the NFL on Sunday shows games pretty much all day.

Well, maybe I should say big "4"....adding in Fox to NBC, ABC and CBS.

But with OTA, on the weekends during football season you should be able to pull in plenty of sports....it's on all day pretty much

        • Can I assume you get at least the 3 major networks on your OTA antenna?

You can assume what you wish, and it may be true for the OP, but my OTA doesn't get them all.

        • on Saturdays, you should be able to catch college football games most all day on one or more of the big 3

That works for some viewers during the regular season. It doesn't necessarily work for those who seek to watch the match involving one particular college, such as the one that a family member attends or attended, if that match is on national or regional cable. And the college postseason tends to be cable-exclusive, with Disney's ESPN as the College Football Playoff's long-term television partner. Likewise if the pro team to which your favorite player was traded is playing in a Monday Night Football match.

Oh that'd be great! In past years I haven't seen any free online ways to watch the Super Bowl - they've all been behind paywalls of cable TV service subscriptions.

The ECB have basically admitted they screwed themselves over by signing an exclusive deal with Sky. 20 years of this means a whole generation has grown up in England without seeing cricket. The popularity of the game has gone down. It's amazing to see the cultural differences with England's biggest rival, Australia, where the game is shown proudly for free on the ABC. This past summer, the World Cup was back on free TV in England; I hope it's not too little too late.

Going to have to get a social media satellite dish to enjoy the sports on the social media app on the big 4K to 8K TV?
  • That's all. Stop the stupidity, make it possible.

  • Roasted, on a tortilla with a nice spicy hot sauce.

  • "If you're a cricket fan"

I stopped reading right there, just like 99.99999% of slashdot users.

  • I thought I escaped cricket when I left the UK.

Now Facebook is going to spam me with silly midoffs and Duckworth Lewis methods.

    • Where else can 'wicket' mean 5 different things?
      • In fact there are 3 meanings to a wicket, the pitch on which the game is played, the wooden stumps and in relation to the batsman getting out, losing his wicket. There’s no sport I enjoy more than the test of concentration, tactics and subtlety that is cricket.

  • If you're a cricket fan, you will be visiting Facebook way more often in the coming months and years.

No, if I were a cricket fan I would be looking elsewhere for my fix, legality be damned. Facebook is banned and blocked from my devices.
