Google's G Suite, which includes Gmail, Google Docs, Hangouts, Meet and other apps, quietly passed a major milestone at the end of last year: It now has more than 2 billion monthly active users, G Suite boss Javier Soltero told Axios Wednesday. From a report: Long seen as the upstart challenger to Microsoft Office, Google's productivity suite is now one of the two incumbents, facing fresh rivals of its own. "That's a staggering number ... These products have incredible reach. Changing the way people work is something we are uniquely positioned to do," he said.

I just wish we could finally sort out interoperability. Scripting for spreadsheets is still incompatible between every vendor. Google uses Javascript, but not the same Javascript that other web tools use. Microsoft uses VB Script. LibreOffice supports Javascript, their own BASIC and Python, but none of them are compatible with anything else.

Exactly. All local schools here required the use of Google classroom now, so practically all children between the age of 6-18 and their teachers are now their "users".
Now projecting that to all the places where schools are closing, it would be strange if their number of users didn't shoot up like a rocket.

The point that is often overlooked is that for most businesses it is typically not a choice between one or the other (G Suite or Office 365), but having to use both. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses - it would be great if they interoperated better, rather than each side trying to recreate each other's ecosystem. The situation is slightly improved on Android, where the Office tools are forced to work with Google accounts and services, but the desktop lags quite behind on this.

ActiveDirectory isn't LDAP. AD merely uses LDAP as its communication protocol.
So it makes sense that things that specify ActiveDirectory don't work with other services, even ones that use LDAP as a transport layer. Using LDAP for authorization is simple, but first youneed authentication. And you need to glue your authentication to your authorization in a secure way. This means you use both LDAP and Kerberos. But there are lots of small differences between implementations, interoperability has to be approach

Snobs do not use Access. It makes a great desktop application builder though. It is not enterprise ready but lets face it half of economic activity is not actually done in giant corporations, it is done in small businesses and they lack tools for improving their businesses because of your closed shop approach. You do that on your own. You use IMAP to pull the messages to your own server, and you can use ODBC to store them if you want. Same with Google Docs; you use their integration API to set up a script that puts your data where you want it.

I suspect the numbers will drop some come June when Gmail starts to kill off the ability [9to5google.com] for some IoT devices to use their free service.
I think that's unlikely. The IoT industry mostly uses OAuth already.
