Reddit Co-founder Ohanian Resigns From Board, Urges Company To Replace Him With a Black Candidate (cnbc.com) 288

Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian on Friday announced his resignation from the company's board, saying he was stepping down and urging the company to replace him with a black candidate. From a report: "I'm writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: "What did you do?'" Ohanian wrote in a blog post. Ohanian, who is married to professional tennis player Serena Williams, also committed to using future gains from his Reddit stock to serve the black community and focus on curbing racial hate. To start, Ohanian said he would donate $1 million to former NFL player and activist Colin Kaepernick's Know Your Rights Camp. "I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop," Ohanian said.

This is racist. Everyone not black who would otherwise be in consideration for a board position should sue Reddit for discrimination. The opposite of Racism is a true meritocracy, not racism in the other direction.

When thinking about a potentially racist situation, switch the races around. If a black person resigned and requested a white person replace him, would that be racist? IF the answer to the question with the races reversed is racist, the original situation was also racist.

Look around. No one is interested in the musings of the intelligencia or in plain logic.

Seems that the intelligencia abandoned rational thought long ago. Plain logic carries exactly zero weight in college humanity departments when topics like Racism or any other grievance are involved. My all time favorite is 'Math is Whiteness' but in general it's obvious that the inmates are running the asylums. Cancel culture is probably at least in part because they know that if asked 'hard questions' they just don't have answers. 1. Meritocracy is currently a lie. It's very rarely the best person for the job—we know factors like height, weight, whether you have a full amount of hair, what your name sounds like, etc., all have a bearing on whether or not you're considered for a job or a raise. In double-blind studies, they've shown that women are less likely to be hired than men for lab positions (even by other women!) or that people with names that sound/look like they come from a minority group are less likely to be hired or considered.

The entire premise of your argument is based on a falsehood, namely, that meritocracy exists for anyone, let alone black people or other minorities.

          2. Now that we have that out of the way, being black (or a POC) has qualifications that come with it that are unlikely to be put on a resume.

For instance, I'm half-Chinese, and my Chinese family has pointed out that I'm much easier to understand when I'm speaking English than my Canadian partner. I don't actually speak any dialect of Chinese and my mother tongue is English, but I talked to my Chinese family in English for my whole life and unconsciously picked up ways of enunciating and forming words that they find easier to understand. My cultural and ethnic background actually carry a weird sort of advantage for when I interact with other Chinese people, but I'd never put that on my resume, even though it might be handy.

Similarly, black Americans are carrying elements of black American culture with them. They have insight to that demographic that is to a certain extent innate. If you were looking to, say, reduce police violence against minorities, you might interview two similar candidates with identical schooling. But if one is white and the other is black, you might need to consider that the black person will have had, almost certainly, more run-ins with the police simply by virtue of being black, and that is experience that cannot be taught from a book or a class.

Under-representation on these sorts of boards is endemic, and people of different cultures bring with them a context that doesn't show up on a resume but is valuable nonetheless. Even putting aside the tenuousness of talking about the meritocracy, there is actual MERIT inherent in being black on an all-white board, as long as you're not the KKK. Honestly, the real problem is that we're not allowed to consider this sort of cultural background as a qualification. I think being from a poor farming community in the deep south is an interesting and useful qualification, even if you're white. We should be allowed to say that we are looking for black or indigenous or some other person of colour because in a majority-white business world, that diversity brings with it useful intangible qualifications.

If your goal is to broaden your appeal, make a meaningful change in your organization, or simply to understand black culture better, it ISN'T racist to hire a black person to take your place.

    • Which is still better than people didn't read my Resume because my name sounded black.

It would only be a Token position if the person was not qualified for the job, and not given the actual authority the position us suppose to have.

      • whether it was token position or not, people will assume so because of how the event unfolded. this is the result of race based hiring.
      • Anyone who skips resumes because of the name deserves to see their business falter.

It's already so fucking hard to find decent candidates, adding another filter based on something unrelated to job qualifications, such as race, is suicidal for the business as well as illegal.

I don't care what color you are or what's under your clothing. If you can do the work and not be a pain in the ass to people around you, you're hired.
        • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

And yet you can prove it happens yourself by just submitting near identical CVs for a job, only major difference being the names.

I tried it decades ago and based on the results thought about changing my name, but didn't. Chloe Bennet did to get her break.

      • I'm sure there are people out there who judge people on their names and other things they had no choice about. As an example, I'd bet there are racists out there who would refuse to consider Leroy Jethro Gibbs, [wikipedia.org] because of his first name.

White guilt is a dangerous insidious myth. People aren’t born guilty in some kind of pseudo Christian cult mentality. White “privilege” is the common decency everyone should have and no one should feel guilty for having in the first place. The answer for past injustice isn’t to rip white people out of cars and beat them to death instead in some kind of sick zero sum game, people have a right to live without threats to their person. Not being beaten to death or not denied a future isn’t a “privilege” it’s a human right, people are being denied basic human rights and even the word privilege cheapens what’s being withheld. Equality and fairness is treating people as individuals, and not some dumbed down fictitious monoculture based on skin color.

According to this white people were still over-represented on boards in 2018: https://www2.deloitte.com/cont... [deloitte.com]

That suggests that white people already have an advantage getting jobs on boards, which by your own logic is racist. So if you are right then they are screwed either way because no matter what they do it's racist.

Of course the correct answer is that doing things which address an injustice with minimal impact on other people is not racist.

          • You hire someone because they are the best applicant for the position. If "the best applicant for the position" is consistently not black, there are two possibilities. One: your hiring procedures are indeed discriminating on the basis of race and that discrimination must be rooted out. Two: Blacks are being denied the chance to become the highest qualified, and the process that educates them must be revamped. In neither case is racism in favor of blacks necessary or advisable.

            • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

In either case one proven way of addressing both problems is to hire someone who is familiar with them.

        • Hiring someone because they are black means not hiring someone because they are white.

    • It's not racism if you have a diversity problem. A diversity hire isn't necessarily reverse racism as much as it is a critical gap in company. There's enough evidence out there that diversity improves performance to the point that some companies view an all white male c-suite as a competitive disadvantage from a capability and understanding point of view.

      • diversity improves performance

Yes... but only if everyone on the team is actually qualified. Hiring by specific skincolor doesn't ensure that you get the best candidates, so while your team may have some advantage from diversity, it may suffer from lack of skill.

The solution is not to hire by skin color, but to fix the educational opportunity gaps that cause those candidates to be less skilled. This is a class issue more than a race issue, and should be dealt with accordingly.
