Facebook Will Show Users a Pop-up Warning Before They Share an Outdated Story (techcrunch.com) 44

Facebook announced Thursday that it would introduce a notification screen warning users if they try to share content that's more than 90 days old. From a report: They'll be given the choice to "go back" or to click through if they'd still like to share the story knowing that it isn't fresh. Facebook acknowledged that old stories shared out of their original context play a role in spreading misinformation, a fact that the social media company said "news publishers in particular" have expressed concern about old stories being recirculated as though they're breaking news. "Over the past several months, our internal research found that the timeliness of an article is an important piece of context that helps people decide what to read, trust and share," Facebook Vice President of Feed and Stories John Hegeman wrote on the company's blog.

..that shows a pop-up whenever you try to go to Facebook, explaining all the evil and stupid things that Facebook does and promotes. You'll have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the long, long list, enter your initials, solve a CAPTCHA, then click 'OK' before it'll let you go to Facebook -- but it'll mock you mercilessly while Facebook is loading.
Betting Mozilla will vote unanimously to include it as a mandatory add-on to Firefox.

On come on, time for reality, Facebook like all social media sites, is where people go to tell lies about themselves. Make their life seem better than it is. Make themselves look cooler than they really (some are quite bad at it and make themselves look really lame). Typical for social media. If you expect the truth, do not log into social media. That social media tries to portrary itself as the truth, just a marketing lie, to sell to advertisers, we data mine the truth about people, no you data mine the li

The ones I see a lot are cases where a black person committed a crime a few years ago and then it gets posted by someone with the comment "Pretty disturbing stuff!" as if they're adding to the conversation on current events

"news publishers in particular" have expressed concern about old stories being recirculated

Indeed, "news" publishers should be very concerned about having people point out their past sins of omission, exaggerations, propaganda and outright lies.

Especially "news" publishers like, say, Facebook.

  • ... Facebook would just always present posts in strict chronological order, from most recent to least recent, instead of whatever fucking order they happen to think a person should see those posts in.

You can ask that your feed is presented in such a chronological order, but it doesn't appear that the changes are long lasting. Often by the next time I check facebook (which isn't that often), it's back to its normal way of displaying the posts that it thinks I most likely want to see first and I have to g

Do you ever feel like everyone is telling you that they know better than you what your own desires and needs are?

Just looking at the internet is proof of why you can't mix cultures.

Everyone is up in everyone's else's business. Telling how to lives, what they can eat, what to believe, what they can and cannot do.

Well, let me help you out. To everyone that has been oppressed, enslaved, abused, murdered, and in general disrespected...

    Welcome to Society!

Where it's your body until I say otherwise.
Where it's my right to be this way but not your right to be that way.
Where my morals can be law but your morals cannot!

Where strawmen and hypocrisy win the day! And last but not least... where Democracy is what we want until the Democracy decided on something we did not like and now you are Destroying Democracy!

Oh shit... someone just said something we did not like... DOX THEM, gather your torches and pitchforks!

*gee, I wonder why people are so up in arms over shit nowadays... shooting people, hurting each other, making threats.... they must be crazy! Hey guys lets go burn shit down and protest for we... are not crazy!

At the end of the day folks, what is it going to take to help you realize that you are building the tools for your own oppression? Just like the black man being investigated as a hate crime for tying a knot the wrong way and people seeing it.

The dagger in your back is yours and you are the one that put it there!

    • Just looking at the internet is proof of why you can't mix cultures.

Your point is that if we just lived in a monoculture, none of this would be an issue?

      • If that is your takeaway then you are part of the group of people I am complaining about in my post.

The multiple cultures are blessings... but you should also avoid trying to shove them into each other too much as well.

Let them mix on their own terms and stop trying to force it. Forcing it is what creates MOST of the worst friction. There will naturally be friction no matter what you do.

People just need to be kind to others and stop fucking with them!

  • In the past 2-3 weeks I've seen in my Facebook feed the following:

    2) Another friend who shared an article from 12 years ago about Amazon removing Animal Farm from some Kindles. It was over a copyright dispute and apparently the seller didn't actually hav

    • I2) Another friend who shared an article from 12 years ago about Amazon removing Animal Farm from some Kindles. It was over a copyright dispute and apparently the seller didn't actually have the rights to sell the book in the USA at the time

Actually (with irony so great as to supply all our steel needs for the next millennium) the book this happened to was 1984.

  • I think this is to limit the virality of certain news stories and outlets. For example, someone just connected the dots between Ben Shapiro's site and a few FB pages that mix new headlines with outrageous and racially/religiously inflammatory stories from years ago.

So someone will get outaged by a story about the "Ground Zero Mosque" and forward that article, driving traffic for the newer stories.(hypothetical example)

This may be a way for FB to rein in some of the socially corrosive marketing that goes on

  • If a story is obsolete/outdated, why even offer it at all? Let alone offering it with a popup.

  • I think that’s a good move by Facebook. Nowadays there’s so many false new being shared around constantly online, hopefully this will help reduce the issue.
