Microsoft Fixes Edge Bug That Made It Crash When Searching With Google (theverge.com) 52

"Microsoft's new Edge browser started randomly crashing when users typed into the address bar," reported the Verge on Thursday.

"The issues appear to have affected Edge users who had selected Google as the default search engine." Microsoft investigated the problem and now says it's believed to have been resolved. The Microsoft Edge crashes started at around 7PM ET, and were affecting macOS and Windows users. Microsoft resolved the problems after around four hours of crashes, but it's not clear why they were only limited to Google search users in Edge.

If users switched to Microsoft's Bing search engine within Edge, the crashes never occured.

If only Microsoft were a giant software house with decades of experience in rolling things out to a billion people, testing simple use cases with automation.

Maybe you forgot the part when MS got rid of their QA group about four years ago? This is why they release a horrendously broken update to Windows 10 every six months or so.

They probably don't feel the need to test Edge, as it's just Chromium, which has been tested for years now.

Predictably, Microsoft took chromium and rubbed the poo on it. You touch Edge and end up with pink eye. Its 2020 and we should all know better by now. I think by picking up chromium Microsoft is really pining for the IE6 days, one browser to rule them all - poo and all.

    • At least Chromium doesn't have the stench of Google all over it like Chrome. Well, mostly not, anyhow.

    • Edge Chrome is to IE6 the way a solidified dog turd is to a baby with explosive diarrhea right after burrito night. Yeah it's still not pleasant but holy shit at least Edge Chrome doesn't make we want to gouge my own eyes out.

      • I'd rather just avoid the poo myself. Fresh and runny or old and crusty, its still poo and its not something I like to play in.

        • No one likes to play with it. Unfortunately as a dog owner / parent you eventually will. I'm just happy I no longer need to fire up Internet Explorer to access company websites anymore.

          • I pick up after the dog and I've changed a lot of diapers and wiped butts - these are required for responsible pet owners and parents. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to pick up Edge and get the poo on me. Willing to deal with poo that I or my family created, yes. Willing to deal with Microsoft's browser poo, no way. Like I said, its 2020 and we should know better.

  • I'm sure MS characterized the use of Google in their web browser as an edge case not needing to be tested.

Microsoft has a history of making their O/S and browser not compatible with others. It started with their version of the open-source Spyglass software turned into the closed-source "Internet Explorer", then mixing that up with their file browser to create "Explorer".

It continued by blocking other search engines (or making it REALLY hard to select them) or lately in Windows 10 making Bing the default no matter what you do requiring a LOT of effort to change it.

Edge is just another coat of paint on the cracked wall.

Windows, Edge, Microsoft... the only real supporter they have is the government wanting them to be the only company "that gets to" buy Tik-Tok.
Everyone else "just has to use them because the software I must have only runs on it."

    SAD!!

Indeed, but what they don't have a history of is fixing the problem when immediately noticed.

Presumably Google changed there incredibly complex JavaScript to do this, probably after Edge was released. And I would be surprised if Google tested on Edge, officially anyway.

    • Sounds like they fixed it server side. Meaning the client is vulnerable.

Right, it makes lots of sense for Google to blow up Microsoft's browser to the point of it crashing and force the user to stick with the Microsoft BING search engine.
After all, Google makes all their money by handing customers eyes over to other search engines.

Put the MSFT kool aide container down and step away from the keyboard. Reality is quite different when you get clean from that junk.

Those millennial Googlers can't help but keep screwing around with their JS to use all of last month's new browser features. Because of course everyone uses an auto-updated browser now. Those of us who prefer to not use the latest Firefox or Chrome suddenly find that mysteriously we can't do something like post a YouTube comment.

My preferred browser tries to track Firefox changes, but the not-so-recent ripping out of the old plug-ins support apparently wrecked a lot of Gecko code to the point where they're

Also DR-DOS has never been a client binary that runs on top of MS-DOS.

I run a Gecko-based browser that crashes when I use Google Maps, so it's not just Microsoft. Isn't it nice of Google to find browser bugs for us?

When Windows 3.11 first came out, it was meant to be an easy upgrade from Windows 3.1, with "some applications may need to be updated first"
Microsoft helpfully provided a list of applications known not to run. Top of the list: Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

  • who would have thought to test the MS Edge browser with a different search engine besides Microsoft's search engine?
