Amazon Opens Its First Amazon Fresh Physical Grocery Store, in LA (techcrunch.com) 13

The shift to online shopping has accelerated in the COVID-19 pandemic, but today Amazon made a bold move that underscores its belief that physical stores will remain a key component of how consumers shop. From a report: In the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills, the e-commerce giant today opened its first Amazon Fresh supermarket. This is the first of a series of Amazon Fresh stores that the company plans to open, with others so far confirmed in Oak Lawn, Illinois; Schaumburg, Illinois; Naperville, Illinois; Irvine; California; and North Hollywood, California. A blog post from Jeff Helbling, the head of Amazon Fresh Stores, notes that the store will open initially invitation-only, based on emails it will be sending out to locals, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. PT.

They are magic. If you plant them, some might grow Platinum Credit Cards for AliExpress.

  • I guess if you want virus done right, trust the good old USA.

I know, -1 troll. Whatever. Like I have karma anyway.

  • As long as I am required to wear a mask to go into stores, I am doing everything I can to avoid going into stores. My preferred grocery store charges only $5 to do the shopping for me and then bring the order out to my car. Very little wait at the time of pickup, and tipping isn't even allowed much less expected. I've been doing it every week for a month now, and every week I'm finding fewer reasons to go back to the old way.

    • I'm fine with wearing a mask, and I prefer to pick out my own produce - so I'm mostly still going out and doing the grocery shopping myself. But I have done the online-order-and-pickup thing a few times - it does seem to work well, and the fee is reasonable (unless your store also jacks up the per-product prices on those orders... which mine doesn't).

And while you're at it, do everything you can to avoid going anywhere among normal rational people trying to get by in a pandemic.

      • Aaaaand there it is. There's always gotta be someone. I checked back to see if this would happen, and you performed exactly as expected.

You have no idea who I am, where I live, what I do, or what the numbers are like here. All you needed to hear was a slight objection to the mask mandate, and you were triggered. Please take a moment and consider what that says about you.

  • Isn't this just another Whole Foods aka Whole Paycheck?

What is even remotely newsworthy about this?

    • The difference is - this only has Amazon's name on it.

Although I expect that'll be true of "Whole Foods" as well, soon enough.

  • They just opened in Louisiana??? (LA)
I guess they just closed as well.

    • Hurricane Laura racked up quite a grocery bill at that store, too. Amazon hasn't figured out how it's going to collect, though.
