Facebook Critics Take on Its Oversight Board (axios.com) 16

A group of high-profile Facebook critics on Friday announced the launch of what they are calling the "Real Facebook Oversight Board," an effort that aims to counter an independent board established by Facebook last year to oversee its decisions on content moderation. From a report: The opposing effort represents how political the fight between Facebook and its critics has become in the lead-up to the presidential election. The group includes leaders from the Stop Hate for Profit boycott, like Rashad Robinson, president of Color of Change, and Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, as well as prominent Facebook critics like Roger McNamee and some journalists and pundits. The new oversight board rival cites an "urgent threat to democracy" leading up to its launch. It criticizes the independent oversight board, funded by Facebook, for its delayed launch. The board is billing its formation as an "emergency response" to urgent issues like voter suppression, election security and misinformation. The first of its meetings -- which appear to be more like media events than deliberations on content decisions -- will be held next week, broadcast on Facebook Live, with New York Times columnist Kara Swisher hosting. The response comes just after the actual Facebook-funded appeals board announced that it would be launching earlier than expected. [...] A document obtained by Axios that appears to be a pitch deck for the project alleges that the Facebook-funded oversight board is "little more than a corporate whitewashing exercise."

Who elected these people the overseers of Facebook? Themselves? Sounds legit.

    • But they'll investigate themselves and find that they've sone nothing wrong. Case closed.

In other news, relying on the good will of corporations is a fool's bet.

    • The existing group was appointed by Facebook, so this will still probably be an improvement.

  • Will all their results be posted as "We have investigated ourselves" memes on my timeline?
  • The way Facebook implemented its fact-checking system punishes people who want to expose far-right disinformation by flagging information as "not 100% factual" which protects responses to right wing hate. Mark Zuckerberg protects Nazis and Trump - why should we expect Facebook to behave any differently.

  • External Oversight Board: We have completed our investigation, and have found that Facebook has:

    - Taken zero action on any political advertising deemed by FactCheck.org to be misinformation
    - Taken zero action on posts that indicate an imminent attack or bodily harm to people
    - Taken zero steps to suppress of QAnon or other hate Groups
    - Actively suppressed any organized protest groups that it's advertisers have deemed harmful to their bottom line
    - By passively allowing political advertising misinfo

When Trump proclaims victory on Nov. 4, I'm going to be pointing to Zuckerberg.

Of course you will. Because the left has no self awareness whatsoever.

Maybe they'll riot. Maybe they'll scream at the sky, again. The last thing they will ever do is reevaluate and reflect.

Branding everyone who ever showed support for Trump as a member of a hate group, to be censored and suppressed, is the most likely.

  • Their oversight board has all the credibility of a stacked deck of cards in a back room poker den. A star chamber would certainly have more credibility. The good news is they rank slightly above a kangaroo court staffed with actual kangaroos.

Iâ(TM)m not sure who they think their fooling with the charade of an oversight board. I canâ(TM)t imagine a real court of law ever finding it credible. Maybe in Berkeley?

Whatâ(TM)s the point of having an oversight board that canâ(TM)t pass a sniff te
