Twitter Verification Returns Early Next Year (theverge.com) 21

Twitter announced today that it would relaunch its verification process early next year along with brand-new guidelines for users seeking out that small, blue badge. From a report: Twitter's announcement confirms earlier reporting in June from app researcher Jane Manchun Wong suggesting that the company was creating a new verification system. In Twitter's Tuesday blog post, the company confirmed that this new system would roll out in "early 2021." Twitter is also asking for feedback on a draft proposal for verification. If no changes to this proposal are made, the accounts that would be eligible for verification would include government accounts, companies, brands, nonprofits, news media accounts, entertainment, sports, activists, organizers, and what Twitter refers to as "other influential individuals." Each type of account must meet specific requirements, like being profiled in a media outlet, in order to receive verification. The entirety of Twitter's draft policy can be viewed here. After receiving feedback, Twitter plans to release the final policy on December 17th. Twitter also announced new draft rules explaining when a verification badge could be taken away. If a verified user changes their display name or bio to mislead people on their true identity, Twitter could pull their badge. Repeat terms of service violations could also lead to loss of verified status.

And yet what's the first thing those real idiots scream when they get called out for some shitty Tweet?

"It wasn't me. I was hacked."

Blue checks basically do nothing to validate or verify any Tweet from anyone. But it does give the worlds largest attention whores one more thing to preen about, which of course they love.

For those unaware, there are a whole bunch of "secret" features you get on a verified account that regular plebe users aren't allowed to use. This includes things like scheduled tweets and additional filtering options to reduce notifications when mentioned, along with an increased "relevance" in searches, meaning that "verified" accounts will show up as "top tweets" in hashtags while plebe accounts will not.

There's a reason Twitter has in the past punished users by revoking the verified status. It makes a user more visible on Twitter along with being tied to special account features.

    • Regular users have had access to schedule tweets for years too. It's not just for verified users. They don't get additional filters not available to others. The same controls are given to both. I say that as someone with a number of verified accounts, and plenty of regular ones.
  • Only people who are covered by extensive media sources get articles on Wikipedia, so Twitter is following Wikipedia policy here.
    • Not really the case. For example, those with an email address for a well-known media agency or someone tied to a company well known will likely be verified. But yes, for those lesser known, providing some links to media articles about you was previously a good way to get verified. It was showing your notability.
  • So in other words: China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and whoever else, will have to have their Intelligence Services spend more time and effort backstopping their cyberoperatives, so they look legit to Twitter? Gee whiz what an inconvenience that'll be for them!
In all seriousness: Twitter would have to do DoD-level background investigations in order to weed out all the bad guys.
On the other hand if Twitter did precisely that, and required applicants to pay out of pocket for the investigation costs, that'd

  • Following the de-verification of Milo Yiannopolis for being a douchebag, anything that a verified user on Twitter says is endorsed and approved by Twitter and all of its employees (including their families), sponsors, parent/child companies, and users.
