Reddit Is Buying TikTok Rival Dubsmash (cnn.com) 20
Reddit said in a statement on Sunday that it has acquired TikTok rival Dubsmash. It did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. CNN reports: Dubsmash allows users to create and share video content, and it's especially popular with young, diverse audiences. About 25% of Black teens in the United States use the app. Women make up 70% of Dubsmash users, and roughly 30% of users log in every day, according to Reddit. The New York-based platform enables more than 1 billion video views per month, Reddit added.
Dubsmash's three co-founders, Suchit Dash, Jonas Druppel, and Tim Specht, will be joining Reddit with immediate effect. While Dubsmash will maintain its own platform and brand, its video creation tools will be integrated into Reddit, which is best known for its freewheeling message boards. Reddit has allowed users to upload and share their own videos since 2017, and the segment has grown quickly. The number of videos posted to the platform has doubled in 2020, according to the company.

Reddit hasn't been "free wheeling" for years. (Score:2)
They went through and removed a whole lot of porn subreddits and censor stuff that becomes contentious enough. I think some of that came with the republican legislation that effectively killed open personals sites like craigslist a few years ago. That's not including the petty tyrants that often end up moderators in various subs.

How do three guys "start up" some massive video sharing platform ? Like, do they have rich parents that hook them up with $5,000,000 in seed capital ?
What gives ? How do they do it ? Surely it'd cost a fortune to set that up ??

Same as most such ventures, probably: VC. Also why there's no real competition to the big guys, as soon as a newcomer starts looking like a challenge, Google or eBay comes along and says "I'll give you a ridiculous amount of money for that." and the VCs that own it say "OK!"

Unlike instagram, snapchat etc, they might show you one or two shared videos if you find a link, but you can just browse and watch tiktok without the site constantly badgering you to "YOU MUST REGISTER NOW!"
It does suggest once a while that you could create one, but you can simply swipe by and it continues to just work.
