Facebook Smart Glasses Coming 'Sooner Than Later' Without AR (bloomberg.com) 22

Facebook's planned smart glasses will arrive "sooner than later" in 2021, but won't feature the kind of digital overlay technology that is associated with augmented reality, according to hardware chief Andrew Bosworth. From a report: The glasses, which are being built in partnership with Ray-Ban and parent Luxottica Group SpA, will connect to a device -- though users won't be able to overlay digital objects onto their real-world view, a foundational element of AR. "These are certainly connected glasses, they are certainly providing a lot of functionality, [but] we're being quite coy about which functionality precisely we are providing," Bosworth said. "We're excited about it but we don't want to over-hype it. We're not even calling it augmented reality, we're just calling it 'smart glasses,'" he added.

Of course they do. They serve you ads. And track where you go. And where you look. To see what ads you look at. To serve you more ads.

      That's lots of shit!

        • Why so cumbersome?

Just telling somebody a story is far easier.
Most of the brain can not tell imagination fom perceived reality anyway. (Yes, that is actually true.)

Maybe people have become too ignorant even for classic manipulation? ;)

        • They just decided to skip AR and move directly to DR ( Distorted Reality )

So, Facebook with a set of eyeglass frames wrapped around it.

How fitting for the "Distorted Reality" pimps-a-plenty on that platform.

        • If enough people get them Facebook posts will become automatic for everyone, including those without accounts.

I agree it sounds like an absolutely shit product, but I'll bet you that there will still be a large number of sheeple that will buy them.

    • ....they don't do shit.

      Oh, they do shit alright!

Just instead of them providing you any useful information, they serve only to give Facebook a real-time feed of what you are doing and surrounding audio.

That is some rich shit indeed!

  • So, they saw an ad for Amazon’s Echo Frames and went “that was minimum viable product?”

  • Requiring a Facebook privacy invasion to work and Facebook will be able to literally spy on what you see.

    No wonder.

Something that permanenty mostly-covertly streams its surroundings to Facebook for exploitation.... Even if the buyer himself agreed, I don't think it's even possible to create anything that breaks the GDPR more.

In practice, the user would have to ask literally everyone close enough to be recognizable (audio/video) for permission *in advance*. And give precise reasons, contacts for complaints, and an information on their rights. (In practice, a big sign outside of the recorded area. And you'd need to get permission to set up that area. Like a film crew. You can't just reserve a street for your enjoyment, for example.)

Note for Americans: Around here, there is an expectation of privacy in public. Which sound nonsensical. But it is actually about forgiveness and intensity of impact. So about the permanency and spreading of said records. Of course, if you make an idiot out of yourself on a major shopping street, you'll still be the talk of the town and can't stop that. You can stop somebody putting videos on Facebook, Youtube and newspapers though. (But on the latter, a judge will have to weigh the GDPR against the freedom of the press, depending on what's better for society.)

  • Banned from my classroom. And my home. And anywhere else I have a say.
  • I hope these get categorized as surveillance cameras and the existing laws in communities against this are immediately put into effect to outlaw them. Hopefully the rest of the world gets on board and bans them as well. Glassholes not allowed.

Consumers show no real urge to wear computers on their face even for gaming where the immersion factor is significant. It's not I'm technological women so much as an 80-year-old women. You would have to make the wearable device extremely useful for people to actually want to wear it much and it's pretty unlikely it's going to be extremely useful. You also have a likely battery life problem limiting what the device can realistically do.
  • You have other senses as well - like the sense of hearing. Augmenting/altering that is also AR.
