Twitter Is Exploring the Use of Facebook-Style Emoji Reactions (techcrunch.com) 14

Twitter is surveying users to get input on the use of emoji-style reactions for tweets, similar to what you'd see on Facebook. "We're exploring additional ways for people to express themselves in conversations happening on Twitter," a Twitter spokesperson said of the survey. TechCrunch reports: Specifically, Twitter's survey proposed a few different sets of reaction emojis, all of which include the heart (like), laughing face with tears (funny), thinking face (interesting) and crying face (sad). It then proposed some variations on this basic set, where the "awesome" sentiment could be expressed with either the shocked face or fire emoji, or where a "support" sentiment could be indicated with either the hug emoji or the raised hands.

More controversially, Twitter is considering a way for users to signal a general like or dislike for the tweet with either a thumbs up or thumbs down, a "100" in either green or red to indicate "agree" or "disagree," or a green up arrow icon or red down arrow icon, reminiscent of Reddit's upvote and downvote mechanisms. [...] Twitter told TechCrunch the work it's doing in the space of reactions is exploratory -- it's only running this survey now because the company is thinking about ways people could add more nuance to the conversations they're having, and how, by doing so, readers would be able to better understand the additional context around those conversations. Plus, Twitter notes that the new emoji reactions would not replace the "heart;" they're additive. But although Twitter hasn't yet built out its emoji reaction set or put it into testing, it appears it's on the path to do so.

Why is there only a happy poop emoji? If there were also angry, sad, and confused poop emojis, all my emojinal needs would be satisfied.

  • Further reducing conversation on the site can't be good for revenue. Perhaps it'll reduce toxicity? Character limits encourage unkind and unthoughtful responses.

While /. is nowhere near perfect one of the things that makes /. far better than many other social mediate sites is that we have _context_ for WHY something was moderated the way it was.

On reddit you just have upvotes and downvotes which leads to a popularity contest and echo chamber.
i.e. Redditards downvoting you because they don't like what you are saying -- even if it is simple as asking a question!?!?

On some platforms you can't even downvote posts. WTF!? What if the information is blatantly wrong? How do you convey "This post is incorrect"?

Twitter doesn't need emoji. It needs a standardized response buttons: +1 informative, -1 incorrect, +1 funny, -1 offensive, etc.

But I guess emojis will solve everything. /s

Why do people call Twitter Shitter? Because of all the crap posted on there can be safely ignored.

    • Comment removed based on user account deletion
    • Buttons with words don't scale well. Emojis are the closest thing to a universal language. I personally think the move will make Twitter look dirivitive and a little foolish, but shareholders won't.

The best mod system will always be the one with the most diverse mods. Reddit was great, but went downhill hardcore years ago with their supermods with an agenda. I don't mind hackernews cause new posts rise to the top and it is univerally easy to get mod points --politically it's all very group think but I'm not

    • This moderation system isn't very good. With so many options available (informative, interesting, overrated, underrated, troll, etc), Slashdot only shows you an average rating, and I have no idea how they come up with that if say 3 people rate a post "insightful", 3 others rate it "informative", and 3 others rate it "troll". Then if if Slashdot says the score is "2 Informative", you would have no idea that the post was rated 9 times, and that 3 people disagreed with it.
  • Posting Clown below every politician I disagree with, and Blood below every woman getting angry, and Hear No Evil Monkey under every black person that disagrees with me, and Helicopter below politicians that deserve to die, and Explosion below every tweet by a Muslim I disagree with, and... you get my point. This will just contribute further to Twitter being one of the internet's many assholes.

  • This will give them a more accurate way to mine opinions on different subjects.
  • This is going to be used to condition readers how to feel about a tweet like a new form of a laugh track for modern audiences.

  • Twitter be like "show replies that may contain offensive content" and it's just emojis...
