Twitter Is Exploring the Use of Facebook-Style Emoji Reactions (techcrunch.com) 14
Twitter is surveying users to get input on the use of emoji-style reactions for tweets, similar to what you'd see on Facebook. "We're exploring additional ways for people to express themselves in conversations happening on Twitter," a Twitter spokesperson said of the survey. TechCrunch reports: Specifically, Twitter's survey proposed a few different sets of reaction emojis, all of which include the heart (like), laughing face with tears (funny), thinking face (interesting) and crying face (sad). It then proposed some variations on this basic set, where the "awesome" sentiment could be expressed with either the shocked face or fire emoji, or where a "support" sentiment could be indicated with either the hug emoji or the raised hands.
More controversially, Twitter is considering a way for users to signal a general like or dislike for the tweet with either a thumbs up or thumbs down, a "100" in either green or red to indicate "agree" or "disagree," or a green up arrow icon or red down arrow icon, reminiscent of Reddit's upvote and downvote mechanisms. Further reducing conversation on the site can't be good for revenue. Perhaps it'll reduce toxicity? Character limits encourage unkind and unthoughtful responses.

While /. is nowhere near perfect one of the things that makes /. far better than many other social mediate sites is that we have _context_ for WHY something was moderated the way it was.
On reddit you just have upvotes and downvotes which leads to a popularity contest and echo chamber.
i.e. Redditards downvoting you because they don't like what you are saying -- even if it is simple as asking a question!?!?
On some platforms you can't even downvote posts. WTF!? What if the information is blatantly wrong? How do you convey "This post is incorrect"?
Twitter doesn't need emoji. It needs a standardized response buttons: +1 informative, -1 incorrect, +1 funny, -1 offensive, etc.
But I guess emojis will solve everything. /s

Buttons with words don't scale well. Emojis are the closest thing to a universal language. I personally think the move will make Twitter look dirivitive and a little foolish, but shareholders won't.
The best mod system will always be the one with the most diverse mods. Reddit was great, but went downhill hardcore years ago with their supermods with an agenda. I don't mind hackernews cause new posts rise to the top and it is univerally easy to get mod points --politically it's all very group think but I'm not
