IFA Berlin 2021 is Canceled, Citing 'Uncertainties' Around Vaccine Rollouts (techcrunch.com) 22

After IFA became one of an extremely small number of in-person trade shows in 2020, the Consumer & Home Electronics GmbH is pulling the plug on this year's event. Initially planned for September 3-7 at the Messe in Berlin, the large-scale consumer electronics trade show is going on hiatus. From a report: Among other concerns, organizer are citing the emergency of Covid-19 variants and concerns around the speed and consistency with which vaccines have been rolled out globally. "Ultimately, several key global health metrics did not move as fast in the right direction as had been hoped for -- from the rapid emergence of new COVID-19 variants, for example in South Asia, to continued uncertainties about the speed of the rollout of vaccination programmes around the world," the organization said in a press release.

  • This is really a global problem, a general lack in good Emergency Preparedness education.
    We need to have society trained and infrastructure in place to deal with emergencies. Having alternate methods of keeping the supply chain going, having methods for people do jobs remotely if they can, being able to get people to the right spot quickly. What to do for a Pandemic, What to do for a weather event, What to do when a particular part of our infrastructure is out.

    • Sorry, no can do. Anythig which might involve people being told what to do for their safety is a non-starter. It's their right to endanger themselves and everyone around them.

      Your mention of bomb drills in 1950 reminded me of the comment I have seen many times, that if the same people who refused to wear a mask were in London during the Blitz, they'd be the people leaving their curtains open and the lights on at night.

    All TFS says is it's a "large scale consumer electronics trade show"

    This is actually getting annoying on Slashdot - the usage of acronyms in the subject or summary that are not explained.

    A one-liner explaining what you're talking about would be nice. It's not hard, editors.

      How's your German?

      IFA = Internationale Funkausstellung

      OK, I'll give some help here, for the non-German speaking Slashdotters:

      The IFA or Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (International radio exhibition Berlin, a.k.a. 'Berlin Radio Show') is one of the oldest industrial exhibitions in Germany. Between 1924 and 1939 it was an annual event, but from 1950 it was held every other year until 2005. Since then it has become an annual event again, held in September. Today it is one of world's leading trade shows for consumer electronics and home appliances.

      Or anyone who's been on the Internet would have seen news posts about some company or other showing something at IFA. It's assumed you know given you're in a tech field, you're likely paying attention to tech news, and the latest test shows up at shows like IFA, CES, etc. It is a large scale trade show for consumer electronics.

      You should also know CES happens the first or second week of January, so if a company doesn't have anything ready then, they may hold out for IFA and other shows later in the year to

        I'm also a husband, father, pilot, and deadbeat. But I've been in tech long enough to know that assumption is the cause of all mistakes.

        • I can't reply to the rest of your comment but you use grammar correctly, i.e. you use an Oxford - serial - comma.
          Well actually I can reply to the other parts.
          I am also a husband, father, pilot, and deadbeat.
          Well not the first 3.
