Opera Brings Its Gaming Browser To Mobile (engadget.com) 13

Do gamers need a dedicated browser? Opera sure thinks so. Two years after launching Opera GX, a browser aimed at gamers, on desktop, the company has started to beta test Opera GX on iOS and Android. From a report: So what sets it apart from regular browsers? For starters, Opera GX features a control panel that lets you set limits on CPU, RAM and network bandwidth. Mobile users can also utilize the fast action button to quickly access functions like search and to open and close tabs. Exporting elements from the world of gaming, the button also uses vibrations and haptic feedback. You can also sync the mobile browser with the desktop version by scanning a QR code. Doing this will allow you to transfer across files of up to 10MB, links, YouTube videos, photos and various ephemera. The company says it expects Opera GX for iOS and Android to leave beta in a few weeks.

  • I tried Opera a few years back, then I dropped it when they had that crappy news screen, Giving you links to all the Yellow Journalism out there, every time I open the App, (also probably sending all sorts or stuff about you and your location)

I'm still using Opera for a couple of special purposes, but the News Screen is eminently NOT one of them.

However my general take is that new features and new choices are positive from the perspective of freedom. More choice is related to more freedom. (Within limits, per the last part of my self-description here and per my primary email sig.)

My problem with this story is that choices when badly implemented are not so helpful. That seems to summarize both of our reactions to the News Screen and it's also my

    • GX Corner to stay on top of latest gaming news and deals

GX Corner is a unique Opera GX feature. In the mobile browser, it sits below the search bar and the browser's speed dial. It features curated and relevant daily news about upcoming games as well as a deals aggregator with links to games on sale. This means that all a gamer needs in order to stay on top of the latest news and deals is their browser

  • Yesterday's Internet Explorer news was the end of the old internet as we know it. And now Opera is making "gaming" gimmicks on top of its spyware. There is no real browsers left any more, it's Chromium all the way down. Firefox is destroying what ever market share it has left on making yet another user interface screw up in version 90. Opera is nothing but spyware, Brave is a crypto scam, Edge is yet more Microsoft EEE junk. Don't bother with the other Firefox spin offs, they are too small to stand up to th
  • Apple will want their 30% cut

  • No matter *what* we do, we can't just keep the stake through its heart.

Both did something interesting decades ago that is no longer relevant, yet have legions of fans wanting another round of it's glory days, triggering articles and press coverage.

Adding features does not necessarily increase functionality -- it just makes the manuals thicker.
