Verizon Enlists AI in 5G Network Build-out (wsj.com) 14

Verizon Communications is enlisting artificial intelligence models to help place thousands of 5G wireless transmitters for optimal performance. From a report: Later this year, the company will begin a multibillion-dollar rollout of midband spectrum, which expands coverage of its existing ultra wideband 5G wireless service. Maximizing coverage with the least number of transmitters is a priority, said Shankar Arumugavelu, senior vice president and global chief information officer of Verizon. "When we build out these networks, these are very capital-intensive," he said. "We have to make sure that we are being very judicious in terms of how we are investing our capital."

The models, designed by in-house data scientists and other employees, factor in a number of variables that can alter the strength of 5G signals, like buildings, bridges, terrain, the position of the transmitter, as well as other transmitters nearby. Verizon, along with rivals AT&T and T-Mobile, is racing to build out nationwide 5G service, a yearslong effort slowed by the lack of available airwaves for fast transmission and long signal ranges, and by the deployment of new network equipment, analysts have said.

        i assume you meant "analyze your fiber content and deduce your diet". anyway, that would be a nice thing to have, if it works it could save lives and make pursuing a healthy lifestyle more informed and easier.

        the problem is that the darn thing will be connected to the cloud and share your poop analysis with a lot of funny people that aren't you. i feel rather uneasy with even my government having that kind of biometrics of whole populations, the idea of it being some shady and unaccountable corporation is t

    • It's true and insightful, so why did some cunt moderator mark it down. I'm betting that many projects put "AI" into the proposal somewhere just to make sure it is there, whether there is any legitimate AI or not.

    Because some of us would like to buy land and lease it to Verizon. I know a guy who was on the inside during the initial cellular deployment and did just that. Made a ton of money because of it.

    On a different note, even though I live in a fairly small town ~50,000, I have 5G here. I ran Ookla on it and I'm getting 50 Mbps down which is a third of my cable ISP but I'm getting 15 Mbps up which is three times my cable ISP.

      NO! as a Verizon stockholder, i say not to do this until all that land has already been purchased or leased at the minimum expenditure.

    • If they did that, then the lease price of the land would just become another variable for the AI to factor in. Balancing coverage with price to lease the land. You buying the land where the algorithm says Verizon would need land and asking for a ton of money, would just result in the algorithm deciding to lease land elsewhere. And you would be stuck with a bunch of land you don't need and can't lease.

      I'm mostly getting 30-50 Mbps down, 5-15 Mbps up with 5G (T-Mobile), which is the same as / slightly fast

  • this also needs to consider incremental future deployment. that is, as increases are made in the future, perhaps as few as one at a time, the existing network plan needs to be sure that future network plans make the new expenditure effective and worth doing. they need to not be in a position where they have capital to build X more deployments that the existing network gains no benefit from while before this is still a most effective network design.

  • So, they are all going to beam their AI into our brains and make us all Q adherents! I knew this was going to happen. May as well move into a trailer park in Florida, buy a red hat, and shop at WallyMart. Damn you, Verizon.
