Twitter Now in Compliance With India's New IT Rules, Government Says (techcrunch.com) 10

Twitter is now complying with India's new IT rules, New Delhi told a court Tuesday, in a move that is expected to ease months-long tension between the American social media network and the government of the key overseas market. From a report: A lawyer representing the Indian government told the Delhi High Court that Twitter's recent steps -- appointment of chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and resident grievance officer in the country -- have made the social network "prima facie" compliant with the new law. India's new IT rules, which were unveiled in February this year, mandates significant social media firms, among other things, to appoint officials to address on-ground concerns in the country.

Pardon the language... But if you expected the big tech to stand up for their users, I don't know another word to describe you.

When Erdogan wanted them to have officers inside the country to be responsible (i.e.: de facto hostages), they caved. When India wanted access to Blackberry encrypted communications, they cave. There was a time Apple seemed to stand up against encryption backdoors, but then they are introducing one directly into icloud (won't you think of the children).

We were childish to think the public can have access to secure communications. They would never let us be.

Just make the government smaller, that way they won't have time to implement these things. As long as there are bureaucrats with nothing better to do, there will be weird, unscientific and unreasonable rules.

You can easily half the budget of the current governments and have enough leftover to implement whatever subsidies for privatized social safety nets you desire.

Can you possibly be any more full of shit? In the U.S., roughly 2/3 of the government is funding non-discretionary items such as Social Security and Medicare. Sure, go ahead and cut them, Grandma won't have any problem moving in with you. And be sure to start saving for her medicines, they can be quite expensive.

Another 1/2 of the 1/3 left is DoD. But then you won't have any problem being screwed by the Russians or the Chinese. Remember, they have your interests at heart. Maybe Taiwan and their chip making

    • at least not anyone over the age of 12.

If you want the public to have access to secure communications you've got to focus on where the power is in your society and take steps to spread that power out. Trouble is, that power is in money, and there's another word for spreading money out: Redistribution.

And now that everyone's freaking out over communism/socialism this conversation is over. It's like Godwin's law without the Nazis. I mean sure, there'll be replies, but nothing useful. At no point will
