Russia Fines Facebook, Twitter for Not Deleting Banned Content (reuters.com) 57

A Russian court on Tuesday said it had fined U.S. social media companies Facebook and Twitter for failing to delete content that Moscow deems illegal, part of a wider crackdown by Russia on the internet and Big Tech. From a report: The Tagansky district court said Facebook had been handed five fines totalling 21 million roubles ($287,850). Twitter received two fines of a total 5 million roubles, it said. Popular messaging app Telegram had been fined 9 million roubles, the court said. Moscow's actions to strengthen its control of the internet have included a push to require foreign internet companies to open fully-fledged offices in Russia and to store Russians' personal data on its territory.

No facebook or twitter would be a plus for Russia, or any country. If I was Putin I'd make it happen.

I think Putin is a fan of Facebook and Twitter, mainly because his agents can use them to pipe propaganda directly into Westerner's brains.

He's just trying to make sure we can't do the same thing back to him.

And have Russia even heard of the Streisand Effect?

Anyone that has a list of content they want to ban?

    • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

Sure. VK will happily take the rest of the market share that it hasn't gotten yet.

Unlike in much of English speaking world, those two aren't a de facto monopoly in their specific niche in Russia, and instead have viable competitors.

In Soviet Russia we facebook you!

    • In Soviet Russia, banned content books your face!

These fines are hilariously small. I think they understand that social media companies might actually prefer to just not be in Russia at all, but they don't want the politics of making that decision on their own. If they gave a big enough push to be used as a pretext, I think facebook would take them up on it.

The thing is that Facebook, Google, et. al, know that they would be replaced by domestic providers. Some can say that Yandex, VK, and other Russian based service providers are actually better. In fact, if you are in the US, VK may be a more private place than FB.

I wonder why the fine was so low. Hell, this doesn't even cover a mortgage on a home in most of the US.

Russians don't really trust their bureaucracy, so it tends to be very weak in what it can do. Including fine sizes.

See Russian history for reasons as to why.

        • In fact, if you are in the US, VK may be a more private place than FB.

Sure, if you believe all this politics theater, and don't think the US and Russia are trading information on one another's dissidents behind the scenes.

          • I know I've scored a hit when a totally innocuous comment like the above is modded troll.

            Thanks, Russian trollmods!

            • If by "dissidents" you mean terrorists, then sure. If you mean that Russia is giving the US government accurate information about democracy advocates in Russia, then what makes you think that is happening?
      • The FSB is going to have some of their most successful operations ever kneecapped if Facebook decides to block content from Russia.

Russia ought to be funding Facebook, not demanding payment.

        • Well, no, the FSB already knows to use VPNs. It will just be less drunken trolls, not less professional trolls.

In the next couple of years there will be a referendum on Scottish independence, and if Scotland decides to leave the UK it will be a historic moment. A 300 year old country broken up by Facebook and Russian agents, with only 3 bullets fired.

          • I'm sure you're right. The Scottish are well known for their love of the UK. Only Russia could have broken up that forced pairing

            • Cluestick, the accusation is that Russia was largely responsible for Brexit, which will likely result is Scottish independence. One of the main reasons that Scottish independence was reject before was that they would have to negotiate to join the EU, and it might require concessions, and the outcome would be uncertain. And also that independence wouldn't mean much, because so much of their governance was already based on EU decisions.

At least figure out what the basic issues are before you spew.

          • Was "Braveheart" Russian propaganda too, in your imperialist opinion?

  • Wonder what they are banning, but if its just conspiracy theories then it's probably a good idea
    • That would end up with most Russian officials being banned
    • by Luckyo ( 1726890 )

Mostly same shit as Canada and UK. "Hate speech".

    • ^ See. They are already sliding down the slope. Tossing out the first amendment dictator style? That is probably a good thing if they are repressing speech which questions the forthright motives and actions of our beloved leaders!!! No doubt even now they are playing monopoly and brainwashing their children with the greedy capitalist propaganda.

    • Judicial authorities have also fined Google citing the same offenses and also for failing to store the data of Russian users on domestic services. As part of broad efforts to reel foreign tech under its control, Russia also banned six major VPN providers this month including Nord VPN and Express VPN.

I guess Zuck's going to have to check his living room couch cushions.

    • That is ridiculous. What did he ever do to you that would cause you to insult him that way? You just stomp in and insult a man like he is scum to be used for your amusement!

Just because Elon is doing better these days doesn't mean Zuck has fallen so far that he'd have to check his own couch cushions.

Most countries: "Yeah, we don't want the US holding our data and using it for god knows what (except we know, and it's not in our best interests). And we're going to levy fines against you until you comply with our rules in our country". I'm good with that.

But Russia? It's not about protecting their citizens from being turned into commodities for American businesses, it's about reducing the ability of other countries to do to Russia what Russia's doing to them. Which is stir up shit in hopes of making things worse everywhere else in the world so Russia isn't doing so badly by comparison, because apparently that's a more attractive option than trying to improve Russia.

    Fuck Russia.

    • I dont think the goal is "to feel better". Its simply that a country thats too busy fighting itself isn't going to be able to launch an effectve fight aganst them. And hoo boy is that effective. The US might be a super power now, but if it manages to find itself isolated and for long enough, its just going to become another developing world shithole. In the same way that the idea that Spain was once a superpower and now probably isn't in the top 20 anymore, theres absolutely nothing to say this can't happen

      • "I dont think the goal is "to feel better". Its simply that a country thats too busy fighting itself isn't going to be able to launch an effectve fight aganst them. And hoo boy is that effective."

        True enough.

"The US might be a super power now, but if it manages to find itself isolated and for long enough, its just going to become another developing world shithole."

Not really. That is part of the propaganda. The US produces or is capable of firing up production to produce everything its population consumes.
  • Oh noes 21 million rupees.

Lord Furher Putin how will we afford that.

  • They need a Great Firewall of Russia to enforce their laws on the Internet.

  • Social media companies are banned from to deleting certain posts [slashdot.org].
Russia and Brazil have created Schrödinger content that must(n't) exist based on who sees it.
  • is Facebook and Twitter telling Russia "You can kiss our big fat asses."

  • People still use Twitter!? I put in it my block file eons ago as a mungy dank pornsite coated with an overlay of blue haired SJWs.
