Russian Authorities Arrest Cybersecurity Giant Group-IB's CEO on Treason Charges (techcrunch.com) 30

Russian authorities have arrested and detained Ilya Sachkov, the co-founder and chief executive of Group-IB -- one of the biggest cybersecurity companies in the country -- on charges of treason. From a report: Details about Sachkov's detention remain unclear but it was reported by Russian media as authorities searched the company's offices, reports Reuters. State news agency Tass said Sachkov, who was arrested on Tuesday, was charged with allegedly transferring classified information to an unnamed foreign government, claims that Sachkov denied, according to the report. Group-IB confirmed the arrest of its CEO, but a spokesperson for Group-IB did not comment beyond a statement on the company's website, which said the company is examining the Moscow court's decision and that it is "confident" in Sachkov's innocence. Sachkov, 35, founded Group-IB in 2003. The company, now headquartered in Singapore, helps companies and governments investigate cyberattacks and online fraud, and has customers ranging from Interpol to Russian banks and defense companies.

  • They called out a Russian "cybercriminal" operation that was really a cyber war op.
I wonder which "hack" it was.

The company, ... helps companies and governments investigate cyberattacks and online fraud, and has customers ranging from Interpol to Russian banks and defense companies.

So we can translate this as Group-IB providing information about hackers, to a target of Russian government hacking then?
  • If the crazy conspiracies about things like a stolen election were true, than either CNN or Fox news would be accused of treason.

But the fact that we do NOT do that proves the conspiracies are fake.

    • I'm afraid that's not how First Amendment works. Sorry.

And the less is said about your understanding of geopolitics the better. People have died of embarrassment before.

      • I did not mention anything about the First Amendment, your use of it demonstrates you are not a trustworthy source of information. Yes, the 1st amendment is related to what I discussed, but I neither mentioned it or relied upon it.

Also, nothing I mentioned was about geopolitics. It was about internal politics, not international politics (nor geography). Using fancy words only work if you understand them.

But do not worry, I am sure that you will not die of embarrassment.

  • You are accused of economic treason, Comrade!

You have transferred state secrets to foreign powers. The state secrets are the exploits used by our state enterprises to steal money and information from the West, and this has grievously damaged our glorious Russian kleptoconomy.

You will be held in prison until all your wealth can be seized, and then you will be killed in a prison accident, or maybe illness.

So die all traitors to the Kleptocracy.

To me it clearly seems like they demanded that some states sponsored malware should be undiscovered by their security software the people rely on.

Company likely didn't listen and here are the made-up charges to back up the threats.

But Nice Try by the state to reframe the issue

  • Maybe they found out that he had at some point said something negative about a person or group

  • Generally speaking, espionage is giving secrets or information to a foreign sovereignty or interest. Treason is espionage where the secrets are given to a defined adversary. I wonder where those electric impulses went?

It's been a business doing pleasure with you.
